View Full Version : Unable to use computer since ram upgrade

25-07-2001, 09:53 PM
I am running an AMD K6 233 which has recently been upgraded from 64 to 128 MB of ram. I upgraded because the old ram died. Immediately afterwards I was unable to boot into windows because the computer would reboot just before loading the desktop even in safe mode. I tried reformatting the hard drive and tried to reinstall windows but have been unable to due to this error during setup 'Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender. EC=0000 CS=0053 IP=278D AX=0000 BX=0442 CX=2310 DX=0010 SI=0B84 DI=0001 BP=4278 DS=0000 ES=0B84 SS=004B SP=425C Please remove any floppy disks from your drives and press any key to reboot your system'
Can anyone help me ???

No one can be totally sure of what the problem is but perhaps a couple of pointers may help lead you to a solution. Are you sure that the old RAM was crook? (Did you remove a single 64MB DIMM and replace it with a single 128MB one?). Your machine won't work with either RAM module so it could point to another problem? Can you test the old RAM in another setup?

If the old RAM is definitely crook then it could be that the new RAM is incompatible with the motherboard and its timings. I have had situations where this has happened and I have just had to get another brand of RAM (many thousands of dollars of it!).

Your problem certainly could stem from a RAM problem but you will need to do some more work to narrow down the options. This usually involves having other hardware to test and isolate the fault. Good luck.
