Yes, there is plenty of them, however some I guess will be better than others so I thought I'd check with the experts.

Well for mp3 duplicates I use the free similarity mp3 finder (http://pcsourcepoint.blogspot.com/2009/07/mp3-duplicate-finder-and-remover.html) (my review) - matches title, embedded tags (if any), and sound/music. Has a sensitivity setting, can play matched results (for verification), and displays percent similarity for content and tags.

The one I liked the best is Easy Duplicate Finder (http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com/). Free and with good reviews.

Wow! does the program bring up some duplicates, it tells me there are 9,250 + 18,891 originals and duplicates.

As the bulk are temp internet files, I have copied Emprun from the other pc to get rid of those and will re-run easyduplicate.

Lurking.

You win, I only got about 3000.

So what I did was create a Junk folder and moved (As opposed to deleting) the duplicates into there just in case. ;)

Iíve got about 4gig of Drivers and the like that Iíve downloaded over the years and I couldnít believe how many were the same drivers with different names. Soft Modem drivers were a prime example, followed by Audio, Video, and Chipset drivers.

There were a fair few Photoís too which had been copied to different folders.

Anyway Iím quite impressed with Easy Duplicate Finder, but, as with all of these programmes you have to take care as I can see it causing havoc if a cavalier approach were taken. ;)

In managing the results, how do you get on should you have two identical files but each of them being relied upon by completely different programs. i.e. can you identify dependencies.?
Mp3, jpg etc. are obvious but others???

Personally, I leave anything that appears in two or more applications.

My rationale is that it probably needs to be there as the application is unable to seek a Library file should there even be one.

However, Iím no expert, but following that procedure Iíve had no strife so far. :clap

Best advice is to leave them. Only delete the files you have created yourself or files from uninstalled programs that were not completely uninstalled.

Or, if you want to experiment, move the files to a temporary folder until you are sure they are not required. Just remember where they belong should you need to move them back again.

I've just recently had the same dilemma of finding a good free app to prune (or verify) duplicate files.

I settled on Clone Cleaner Lite.
The free version carries the one annoyance of needing to place all files to be tested into the same folder (or subfolder of it)... ie the same 'tree'. But it is loads faster than the other apps I've trialled

There are some other apps that are better suited for finding music and pictures that are similar (but not 100% identical eg different id3 tags) for deleting, if these media are your issue).

From my own experience I recommend Clone Remover. It is useful utility for searching duplicate files and folders. Searching for duplicate files belonging to a certain group: archives, office documents, images, video and music, Internet. It is ideal for Windows and Vista and has open source. You can test it and make decision about future use.

I agree antoy09.
With Clone Remover you can set the parameters
to seach and select removal by size, date, whatever.
I use it often to edit my picture and music folders.
You can get this free if you look in the right places
on the web
