I'm using home premium the only thing it doesn't have is an inbuilt copy of XP for the XP mode

Definitely :)

Heck even Home Premium is enough for the better majority of people, they should have labelled it "Power User Edition" just so that it doesn't have the 'stigma' that you're getting a cut-down edition.

You may just be wasting your money getting the Pro / Ultimate version.

You can't actually do an upgrade as such from XP. It will be a fresh install.
And my experiences with XP Mode were a dismal failure. I would recommend people not bother and get Home Premium instead.

Don't bother, unless you need the security and domain features, or XP Mode.

Even then, you can setup XP Mode in Home Premium preovided you have a legal XP liscense

As PCTek has mentioned, you cannot perform an upgrade from XP>7

You will need to boot from the DVD, then select "Custom Install"

You should backup all data first, but when you upgrade all old files/settings should be in a Windows.old folder in root of the system drive.

Once you've got all your data run disk cleanup to clean up all the old files..
