Sometimes my MS Outlook can't or won't download my email from the server. I then log onto webmail, delete all spam, etc. and when I run Outlook again it downloads my email. The other day there was no spam and it still did the same. Am I missing something here, perhaps a tick or two? XP

What mail was there? Do you start Outlook and leave it or do you just turn it off if nothing arrives immediately? Do you have a friend that sends every dumb joke even the ones with huge video attachments?

No, no friends like that. Start Outlook, wait for it to d/l and then it either appear or it give the standard fault message (unable to connect, yada yada). If no fault, sweet. If fault, go to webmail, exit again and start Outlook again and hey presto, it works.

Which settings are you using Sarel, the old ones or the new ones?

Go into Outlook - Tools -> Account Settings -> View or Change existing accounts (or just double click on your account if you use Outlook 2007)

Check the following and post the info back here..

What is your..

SMTP server? send.xtra.co.nz or smtp.xtra.co.nz

Under more settings, in the outgoing server tab, is anything selected there?

In the advanced tab, what ports are being used? 110 and 25 or 995 and 465? Is SSL selected on any of the ports?

Cool. I've seen a few odd issues with Xtra email when the new settings are being used. Let us know what settings are being used and we'll give you a few things to try. :)

Have you checked your settings as per http://telecom.custhelp.com/app/answers/list/kw/Email%20settings/

My settings :

Inc = pop3
Out = send

SMTP = port465
pop3 = port995

SSL ticked

More settings - nothing ticked

All my settings (above) same as Xtra faq's, so it's something else?

I would try using xtras old settings. All the setups i've done in the last year have all been with their old settings and I've had no issues as of yet.

Try the following and see if you have any joy.

Inc = pop3.xtra.co.nz
Out = smtp.xtra.co.nz

SMTP = port 25
pop3 = port 110

SSL off (you can press restore defaults on this screen if there is such an option).

Make sure you untick 'my outgoing server requires authentication' too.

See how that goes.

Bl**dy Outlook Express doing it again, and even using yours Wanui it still comes back with the little box asking for username and pw. B*gger. Doing what I usually did also did not help.

Nah, get the same error mesage :

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'xxx@xtra.co.nz', Server: 'pop3.xtra.co.nz', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] Error logging in. Please visit http://mail.yahoo.com', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Well it looks to me that the password is wrong.
Phone the helpdesk and get the password reset.

I had a weird problem once, where I suddenly couldn't access my email through anything, not even webmail.

Called the helpdesk, they told me my email had been "locked" (No idea what that meant or why it happened) but they fixed it straight away

Try a system restore to last good date. May not work but I have had quirks fixed doing this. It will also help diagnostically.

Even Xtra HelpDesk could not help - the fact that I can read Xtra webmail stumped them. Looks as if I'm looking for another email client.

D*mn OE working again - for no reason - just as I prepared to install Thunderbird. Some things can't be explained, hey.

Why don't you switch to TB, anyway? It is far better than OE. Even MS has abandoned OE! TB will import your OE stuff.

+1 more for Thunderbird, though its been a few years since I used anything Windows, I was using TB before the switch
