Partner has XP sp3 on her tower with all sorts of "protection"
ie:Avast Mbam and a long list of other stuff. Is it just as safe if we put the new MS security suite on and delete everything else as advised by ms?
What about the windows firewall?
She uses Firefox and Thunderbird and only uses IE for windows updates.

You may have to uninstall Avast, if you install Microsoft's. Microsoft Security essentials doesnt include a firewall (its not a suite, since it doesnt inc a firewall). MBAM should be ok. As it doesnt normally run in the background (unless you register it, and enable the protection module/option)

XP has a firewall built in, make sure its enabled if you uninstall other software firewalls off the box

The very first two lines (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/) - under "About Microsoft Security Essentials" - Suggests it, but keep the other antimalware programs - so far I have had Spybot, Super Antispyware, Spyware Terminator, Malwarebytes all on with MS Security, and appear to play nice.
