In the past I was not impressed with Windows 7, but have recently installed a later edition.

I installed it on a PC AMD dual core with Nvidia chipset & 2gb Ram.
Put all my old software in it, some ancient like Dos Professional File, SuperVoice for Windows 3.1 & Calendar for W95. They all work perfectly.

Drivers were found for everything except the Video card. These devices included a 56k Win Modem, 56k USB Modem, USB Sound card.

W7 boots & shuts down very quickly, is nippy, and is very stable.

This is a good one I think!

Despite blam6's generosity I still haven't gotten round to installing and play with W7!! I probably would just upgrade to W7 if I get some free or cheap upgrade to it though.

Yeah, but only for students in the engineering and compsci departments. I'm in the biological and geography/environment department. :(

That's why I'm going for home premium. I don't need the extra stuff such as XP mode and if I do I'll do it manually as I still have a spare licence

Home Premium has enough for the *vast* majority of users. Unless you need Bitlocker or XP Mode, stick with Home Premium, you're not missing out on anything ...

I've only run Win 7 RC on a few computers & managed to get the BSOD once (hadn't got one off those in yonks!). Also personnally didn't like the changes from Vista so I've decided to wait until it has been 'out in the wild' for awhile until I change my OS.
- just cautious I suppose

What 'edition' of W7 do you have?

I've got W7 RC on one PC here. Seems stable enough though the new task bar is nuts. You can't pin a drive, folder, control panel to it and no Copy, Cut, Paste icons in the file manager. Seems to be a backwards step in the user interface area..

Need a student identifier thing the uni gives you apparently. And I doubt no matter how nice I am they won't give me it to download W7.

Hey, MSDNAA is for all students at University, regardless of the department/faculty that you study in.

ComSci and IS students have their own portal where we can get other specialized software but MSDNAA is a free for all. Enjoy! :D

That is not correct. MSDNAA is only available to students enrolled in at least one course run by a faculty/school/department which has subscribed to the service. They pay around $700/year for this. See: http://blogs.msdn.com/nzstudents/pages/msdnaa.aspx

The Auckland Uni situation is probably a glitch in the system where they aren't checking the enrolment status of students. Somebody hasn't configured the ELMS system properly.

Alt + nothing

Here is your file manager, just normally, without Alt:
Attached file: alt_1.PNG (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/alt_1.PNG) (27 KB)

With Alt:
Attached file: alt_2.png (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/alt_2.png) (24 KB)

You can get to them in one extra click - they're under "Organise".

Based on the list I posted earlier, it doesn't seem to be (http://blogs.msdn.com/nzstudents/pages/msdnaa.aspx)

You could do a search here and see if you find anything: http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchIntl.aspx
