Hi I have got two 120GB IDE harddrives I want to use. I bought a USB to IDE adaptor but can't format the drives.
The show up in computer mamagement but ask to be initializd. When I try this I get the message " Drive not ready". They don't show in My computer or Seagate tools.
I have tried various jumper settings and plugging into the computer directly. I am using Win 7 but have tried on Vista also. I think the drives are completely blank.
Is there any way to format them to use?
I also have an 80GB drive that works fine.
Thanks,
asdex

set jumper to slave, and plug in to IDE on the motherboard then turn on the computer and check the BIOS to make sure the drive is enabled. let us know the results

Hi thanks for your reply. It will take a day or so to try your suggestion as I will do this on an old PC I have to get running.
I will let you know the outcome.
Cheers

I had a USB to IDE adaptor which required the HDD to be set to master mode or else they wouldn't work.

If the drives are brand new or have been zero filled and contain nothing then they will need to be initialized. Why this cannot be done in your case I do not know...
