Everytime I try to play a sound file using WMP 11, an error pops up saying either sound not configered or in use by another device.
Video is OK, but No sound.
XP Pro SP3 with Onboard sound and all the normal windows sounds play just fine.
Drivers all updated and Devise manager is not showing any problems.
I have stopped just about all services running and still the error.
Have rolled back WMP to Ver 9 and still the same.
Have removed every other media player, plus almost all games, programs etc, that was on the system and almost at the stage where there is nothing left to remove.

I have a backup image of Windows on another Hard drive and when I swap the disks over to this fresh copy, WMP runs fine.

Any ideas where to start looking to see what is causing this error??

Thanks all.

Welcome to PF1 - try going into the media Player options, and set the WMP as the default device for playing all media files.

Also found the following - Check to see if this helps :
Open the Media Player

At the top, Click on "Tools"

Select "Options"

Click on the "Devices" tab

In the list of devices, double-click on "Speakers"

Under 'audio device to use' it probably lists your sound card ...THIS IS WRONG!!! !using the selector button on the right side of the window, change this
setting to:
"Default Directsound Device" (Note that "Directsound" will show as one
word).

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I checked all those settings and sad to say, didn't solve the problem.
On a good note, it is fixed and was to do with the sound drivers. Rolled back to an earlier version of drivers and now works.

Once again, thanks for your input.
