View Full Version : Will these Windows updates "break" my Laptop?

I've read in various forums anout people getting into messes by giving Windows automatic updates full reign. My primary hard drive failed a while back so I turned automatic updates off (in fact I've always had it off) while i got things sweet again. So, I was wondering if any of the following are known for causing problems:
Also: a) should I install them one at a time or can I get away with doing them in one hit?
b) Is it important to install them in numerical/date order?
c) Do I need to install the IE patches if I'm using Firefox?
d) There's one for .NET Framework 3.5 - do I need that whatever it is?
c) Does Windows update set it's own restore points for each update (yep - that's right I've never consciously installed an update before!!)

Depends if you install programs that require net framework 3.5. If it does and its not installed, the program wont install, or it may install but wont work properly.

So, before you install whatever read the system requirements. I dont know what the other updates are or do. So, cant tell you whether to install them or not. BUT, if theyre critical, I would install them

Most updates are to fix security breaches that hackers have found in Windows. Yes you should install IE patches although you are using FF as IE is really part of the OS. I have my updates set to auto download but let me install them. I have only ever had trouble with an update a few years ago when one wouldn't install. I eventually manually downloaded and installed it.
If you want to know what all those updates are for just type each one into Google ie kb950124 one at a time.

Just reinstalling a Windows Vista - all the critical and important updates have taken most of the afternoon - 69 updates after the original install,(340+ MB) and then another 3 , and then SP2.

Went through sweet as - just a little on the :sleep side.

Only got the office updates to go - got to install office first though

The problem with the PC originally was the updates were not done - they had certain updates only installed - and thats what has caused part of the problem. Related to This thread (http://pressf1.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?t=102922&highlight=Ktee).

If you do it from within windows (from the shield), just tick what you want and it'll install whatever. All at the same time (one after the other). If you download the updates manually then install them, install them from the lowest to the highest KB. You may have to reboot a few times, otherwise the next update may not install
