View Full Version : Sorting out the new forum layout

Thought this might be useful to refer to for anyone who likes having a usable forum...just for Firefox at this stage if anyone wants to add instructions for other browsers that would be great. Should be a bit easier than trawling through the multiple threads about it or creating a multitude of new ones. It's a real shame that we have to do this, but Fairfax BM, like most other large companies these days, just don't seem to care about anything other than their bottom line. :groan:

Not sure if Jen or Chill would sticky this or not, if one of them could that would be great. :)

Method 1 - Using Bletch's slylish script in Firefox.

It would be sensible to make sure the latest version of FF is installed (3.5.3)

Install the Stylish addon from here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108) if it's not already installed.

Once installed a small grey/white *S* icon will appear on the bottom right of the FF window. Click on this, select *Write new style* and select *pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

Paste the following code under the {

/*remove ads and misc branding clutter, clean up layout */
table[bgcolor="#DF0026"], /*red banner at top of page*/
#navigation, /*grey fairfax navbar at top*/
td[width="170"], /*left ads*/
div[style="margin:0 0 5px 0"], /*top ads*/
#sponsor_div, /*bottom ads*/
div[style="width:302px; float:left; margin-right:10px; border:1px solid #cccccc; padding:5px; "], /*more bottom ads*/
#adSpace2 /*even more bottom ads*/
{display: none;}

/*fix damaged alignment in forum thread list & forum header*/
td[align="center"] {text-align: left;}

Give the script a name and click *Save*. The script should be applied, and you can now actually use the forum.

Method 2 - Using Adblock Plus and NoScript in Firefox.

Make sure both AdBlock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865), the AdBlock Plus element hiding helper (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364) and NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722) are installed.

Choose one of the defaults for ABP, I use the Easylist USA one and that works fine, any of them should be OK though.

Allow pcworld.co.nz in NoScript, click on the small arrow next to the ABP icon in the top left corner of the FF window and click on *Select element to hide*. Click on a piece of the empty column down the left hand side of the screen, and make sure you select the width option, otherwise the rest of the forum won't display properly.

If somehow it doesn't go right or the forum breaks, you can undo the change by clicking on the ABP icon arrow and preferences. Delete the entry for pcworld.co.nz and it will go back to normal, then use Bletch's script. :p

You don't actually need NoScript installed - I personally find NoScript a right royal PITA.

Adblock Plus and Element Hiding Helper is sufficient

I have actually uninstalled Stylish now that Element Hiding Helper does the same job.

It means when (not 'if') the Fairfax code writers (is that too kind a description for them?) change the layout again, I can just reselect the offending - and offensive - ads with Element Hiding Helper, and Bam! they're gone!

No waiting for a clever bod to update Erayd's (Bletch's) stylish script...

I think some person at Fairfax is listening.

The forum is not centered as it was earlier this morning. :-)

I'm still using IE8 and have no intention of changing to Firefox.

That's a very good point about NoScript johcar. I'm not sure why I put that in, probably just cause I use it. That bit can be left out. :p

They have changed the text alignment in the last hour.
