Hi for the last week my computer has been trying to download and install the following

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

For some reason it won't install.
Do I need to have this update? - If not how do I stop this update from downloading/installing.
All other Windows updates seem to install alright
I'm using XP pro SP3, Comodo Firewall and Avast and have been for the last 12 months

Well you don't actually need them as such, but for some programs they are required.

Personally I would download it manually and install it.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7&displaylang=en

Download that and install it. You shouldn't get any errors and it should have disappeared from Windows Updates. Try downloading .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 now from Windows Updates, and it might just work.

There are other ways you can go about fixing Windows Update issues.

A) Google is your friend. Type the problem in and wa-la!

b) Uninstall all .Net files from Windows Updates, and start again.

B) Use Dial-A-Fix (http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix). Always fixes the Window Updates problems, by restarting and clearing all the configurations and bits of pieces. However I advise you leave that as a last resort.

See what the others have to say about it though.

Good luck!

I know Google is my friend but when it comes to sorting out computer problems I don't want to sort fact from fiction that's why I joined this forum. I'll try to download it manually and install it tomorrow.

Search for windowsupdate I think it is. Its a txt file. Open it and look at the bottom of the page for errors. Tell us WHAT the error code is, or says. That'll give you a clue on WHY it wont install. You're probably missing an install / a file, that it needs so it'll install

I've had a look at the windowsupdate txt file

I also had a look in the control panel add/remove programs and found I had these installed

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 hotfix (KB928366)
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0

So would I be right in guessing that I need to download/install this first (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6) then then SP1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7)

That sounds right, it helps if the original install is installed before a service pack is installed
