Pa. man fires cannon, hits neighbor's house

A Pennsylvania Civil War history buff who recreates firearms from old battlefields, fired a 2-pound cannonball through the wall of his neighbor's home.

54 y/o William Maser accidentally fired a cannonball Wednesday evening outside his home in Georges Township that then ricocheted off a tree and hit his neighbor's house 400 yards away.

The two inch cannonball smashed through a window and an inner wall before landing in a bedroom closet.

Local authorities say nobody was hurt. Neighbors in the area have heard reports from large-bore firearms before and dismissed this event as just another loud bang or boom, depending on how close they live to Mr. Masser.

Surrounding neighbors painted William as a kindly, older "eccentric" individual who has certain feelings about reliving history, but that pursuit has never been considered dangerous before.

There are thoughts of reconsidering that possibly ill-conceived notion now, neighbors stated.

The local children however still view him in awe and consider him as a local "Mister Wizard" of television fame.

State police charged Maser with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Calls to his home phone number went unanswered all day today.

Speaking to WPXI-TV about his recreating 19th century cannons he said it is a longtime and normally peaceful hobby. "I don't know what went wrong this time. Next time I will point it in a different direction, perhaps toward the park".

The owner of the damaged house says: "....there's not gonna be 'next time.'"

He also says he is sorry and he now intends to stop shooting them from his property - which is in a small township southeast of Pittsburgh.

America, where the right to bear arms (and small cannon) is enshrined in the Constitution!! :D
