Hey trying to get parents pc going better than it is now without reinstalling it. And I was wondering do out of date drivers cause any problems? Because if I remember right it has never had any drivers updated.

updated drivers can/will fix weird problems.

defragging/cleaning out temp files also helps
does it have all windows updates up to date?
how old is the pc?

couple of years old. Have defragged quite recently with defraggler but there were some files it would not defrag. Yeah has windows update, having weird problem with office 2003 sp3 not installing.

http://www.pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=83119 this shows up when you shut down so we enabled hibernation. And when you log back in after trying to install office 2003 sp 3 it says the installation was unsuccessful

Yep, that BSOD can mean either driver issues or a hardware problem.

Try shutting down from safe mode.

if it is a driver or hardware problem why does it only show when shutting down?

Could be a corrupt profile as well if its only showing sometimes.

Assuming its XP HM - log in normally, go to the Control Panel / User Accounts , and create a new user account ( Select Computer administrator).

Reboot the PC, log into the new account, let it load up ( takes a few moments) then see if that account reproduces the same problem.

If it does then its a a software problem someplace.

As M$ said once at one of their road shows --"Theres only two problems with a PC. Hardware or software" :nerd: -- Smart arses :)

Check the event log.

Under shutdown you should be able to see what the problem is, if its Vista

If its XP just look in the event log.

do out of date drivers cause any problems?

No.

Corrupt drivers can cause problems. Damaged drivers can cause problems.
Buggy drivers can cause problems.

But just because a new version comes out does not mean a PC will suddenly have a problem with a driver.

Sometimes, especially if its pig slow and has been around 3 + years, it's better to blow it all away and do a fresh uncluttered clean install.
Does wonders.
