I have an Asus P5KPL motherboard to which I have connected an IDE hard drive with Win XP installed. I have also added a Sata Hard drive but can not get the motherboard to recognise it. The motherboard should have auto detected it but didn't. What specific steps do I have to take to achieve recognition please. How do I get it to auto detect.

Do you have the manual for the motherboard, what does it say about the SATA controller, you can download manuals from Asus web site.
Is the SATA drive a known working device?

Is the SATA controller enabled in BIOS?

Do you know the drive and cable are ok?

Are you using SATA mode or IDE emulation in the BIOS?

Be default XP will not pick up SATA drives unless they are using IDE emulation.
