View Full Version : Auckland area lunch meeting - In honour of Laura's visit.

On of the more regular attendees at PF1 Auckland area lunches is heading for town so why not ink in a definite commitment for 1 PM on Sat 29th of this bonny August?

How about the traditional Albert St Eatery, since they cook well and have better weather too?
So far we have Laura, possibly Jamuz, maybe bob_doe_nz , plus myself just to lower the tone a bit.

It is pretty amazing when you think about it; with all the billions of people in the world, Laura is in the top .0000000000000000000000000000001 percent of attendees, and she comes from Dunedin! (For Surferjoe46, that's quite a long way to travel in a small <but perfectly formed> country.)

It's a pity none of the PCW staff can come, but understandably, when you can only afford two days each week in Hawaii, it is too tough to tear yourself off the beach and come back to NZ for lunch. ;)

Er..........how about my visit? I come up on the 29th October for a few days remember?
Indeed - we await that event tremulously.
However, it is not really safe to advise the kick-off too early 'round here, or like a pack of rabid dogs, PF1'ers will have suggested a near infinite number of venues, an (amazingly enough) even larger number of suitable times, and then a wide choice of reasons why nothing is suitable. :D :D
Given that the date is pretty much set in concrete, that narrows the dissent possibilities to around 1,000,000 venue choices and a few double-votes. Fortunately, the traffic will keep a lot of dissenters on the road for the entire performance, so we usually have a restricted number of protagonists, who can then happily bicker through a meal on why everyone else has the wrong OS, - or hardware, or - - well, anything.
While these gatherings are moderately moderated, the moderators consider themselves on a break and the immmoderate have to modulate themselves. Luckily for us a Southern Member comes to the party with her iron discipline to sort out things. (Laura does not believe in infractions, trusting more in a left hook.)

In short, how about we announce the Official SI visit no.3 for this year a bit later to minimise the dissent? ;)

Cancel the dentist right away - you can't come to the lunch feeling miserable and poverty stricken. I'll take along a large pair of pliers and straight after you've eaten, we'll whip 'em out. Laura's Left Hook wil provide the anesthetic, and I think it safe to say the rest of us won't feel a thing. (Don't forget to mark the redundant choppers with a waterproof marker before you meet the anesthetist.)
When the fangs are safely out and you regain consciousness, complain to the chef about a vicious exploding noodle and demand compensation; you could well make a handsome profit.
Isn't that better than the evil dentist?
We'll work out something for the braces when PC tech comes up. People from down there are pretty resourceful I believe. ;)

Joe, with the prospect of sitting on your porch in the California sunshine, I'd be happy to drink any kind of cold beer.

But I fear my bank's heart is so cold it's positively frozen. You could chip the ice off it.

Why not have an extra glass for me yourself?
Best I can do right now, alas...

SurferJoe46

The loss is entirely mine.

You sure you can't get here? I make some of the world's best - no, make that THE WORLD'S BEST eggplant parmigiana.

Layers of fresh ripe eggplant, mozzarella and ricotta and my own marinara sauce made from scratch with tomatoes and peppers out of my own garden tastes really good with a nice Mexican cold beer.

Sure you can't warm up your banker's heart - if he even has one?

Alas, your culinary navigation tricks might lead you into gastronomical mysteries - we are switching back to the old venue for this trip. Remember the weather last time? Laura was pretty hosed off by the time she got back to the station since it rained on her parade all the way down Queen St. Moving Britomart Station closer to the middle of Queen St might be a bit risky in the time we have available. We'll be at the Albert St Asia Food Court, which is pretty handy to public transport. (Bus, train, ferry, they're all about a block away.)

Well, as a compromise to suit Chilling_Silence's restless gizzard when provoked, how about meeting in the foyer of Britomart Station and when the Guest Of Honour arrives we can ceremoniously march or slouch across to the hall of a thousand aromas? Possibly the function has not yet achieved sufficient seniority to demand that we be allowed to march with flags flying, drums beating and bayonets fixed, but we might ask if we can take a double push on the pedestrian lights button.
Well, how about a free turn on putting rubbish in the bin?

The Britomart foyer we could use (to allay the inevitable confusion) is the slightly raised portion just inside the main Q street doors, or at the top of the 2nd escalator for the trainees. It is handy to the ticket counter for them what needs tickets counted, but best of all it is free and it seldom rains in there. There's chairs too.

What? Britomart Station has public transport that arrives on time.

I can only think that seeing as some may be arriving by train and others may arrive by cycle and still others may arrive by using a bus and others may arrive by motor powered vehicles the chances that you all meet at the same place at the same time would be greater than the chance of me winning Lotto. For the record I don't even buy lotto tickets.

R2x1
23-08-2009, 11:41 PM
Every Britomart train arrives on time. Not necessarily the advertised one alas.
I may well go by ferry, it arrives only 80 metres or so from Britomart and seems really easy to park. A great joy of Winston's Wonderful Wrinkly cards.

I've stopped buying lotto tickets as I found the change in the odds was so minute as to be not worth the effort. If I'm lucky enough to win, then I'm lucky enough to find the winning ticket blowing down the street.

Well, now that people are talking about countdowns ( this soon!) and R2x1 keeps saying "Aw shucks" stuff that makes me blush, it's only fair to enter my own countdown.
(The fact that I'll be able to post for the rest of the week - albeit from my sister's house in Avondale - is quite immaterial...)

So - this is my last burst before turning off the comp & finishing some of the hundred-odd tasks I told myself earlier I'd definitely do before leaving. Promises, promises...Why do I try to kid myself?

Departure from the house is 7.15am tomorrow. The bag is sort-of packed. The tricky do-I-take-that-or-not decisions are not yet made.
And as 7.15am might as well be the middle of the night for someone with my sleep habits - and the alarm clock has packed a sad - there is a 6am wake-up phone call booked.
On similar occasions, I've been known to simply stay up all night to solve that problem. Now I'm older, I'm supposed to be wiser. We'll see...

Forgive me for not defining my arrival time at the venue. I left my timetable collection behind last time. And I have four whole days to decide on train - or bus - or train..?
(Your Auckland MAXX thingy is simply marvellous, I've found. I do wish Dunedin had something similar)

Back later...

Oh right, fair enough.

Course-coordinators of various papers sent out e-mails requesting for help on that day, that's all.

So just to clarify:

Everyone except Chilling_Silence will meet up inside the Britomart Terminal. I think there are some seats next to the mini mart kiosk by the entrance.

At 1PM, we will converge to the Albert Street International Food Hall and catch up with Chilling_Silence. Food and drink will be consumed, I will hide my face again and we will be merry and off our rockers.

That sound close enough?

Yes, who could forget Laura? She did try a couple of stealth moves though, sneaking in by car instead of the train and using the side door instead of two escalators.
Later, she was spotted looking decidedly backward (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/29082009(005).jpg) at an olde furniture rest home in Parnell.

Yeah that's where, there is a second set there now that it's finished. There's also a set on the intersection of Talbot St and Salisbury roads, made everything slower but at least it is actually possible to turn across the traffic now. :p

It looks like they are trying to create a sort of Richmond ring road.

Kind of makes sense; Richmond Devn is pretty dangerous at peak times with the buildup of traffic causing queues at the Queen St intersection (have a piece of road here in Dunedin with the same problem!), and Queen St itself can be a shocker, especially with the doddery old buggers driving up and down there!!

Yeah it is, there was a bit of a moan, everyone asking why we needed another one as there are 4 in the region already.

I think their reason for putting one there was the one in the mall could only open when the mall was open, eg no late nights/weekends which I imagine would cut their potential profits in half.
