I have a Pctel HSP56M on board modem. It is Cr-p. How do I go about disableing it and installing a Proper modem either internal or external.

Click on Start
Click on Settings
Click on Control Panel
Double Click System
Click on the Device Settings tab
Open the Modem menu
Highlight your onboard modem if it appears here.
The first tab of the modem properties should give you the option to disable it in this hardware profile.
If after rebooting, the OS is still trying to use it - see if there is an option to disable it in all profiles.
Install your new modem as per the manufacturers instructions - most are Plug and Play now - so have your drives disk handy and Windows should (!) do the rest.
Open Dial Up Networking by double clicking My Computer and the Dial Up Networking folder, select your connection. Right click on it and select Properties and then change your on board modem - which should not show - to your newly installed one
