weird defragmenter

Im having trouble with disk defragmenter for win98. It works fine until about 70% complete, but then reads 'drives contents changed, restarting' ...and then it keeps restarting. Any hints?

It can do that, just leave it for a while and see if it gets through,it might say starting again but it should speed up pretty quickly to where it was otherwise go cntrl+alt+del and shut down everything but explorer and systray before you start.
Make sure your anti-virus isnt set to autoscan the hd and disable fastfind, or just boot to safemode and try running it there.

Restart your computer in Safemode and defrag from there - problem solved.

Safemode: Start\Shutdown\Restart & when rebooting - depending on your machine, press Ctrl or F8.

Can also control alt delete and close most programs that are running and disable anti virus and restore programs.
