Does anyone know how to scan RAM for problems? Freebie downloads?

My husband has bought a new Acer inspire laptop, running Vista. When I ran setup, it did a couple of system backup DVDs - the second took 30 mins to write and over 2 hours to verify, then hung - screen froze, no mouse or keyboard input. I restarted, and it went really slow.

Have since restarted, but sometimes it has a little cow and goes slow - 15s for right-click to bring up the context menu, for instance. A restart fixes it.

I'm unfamiliar with Vista, but want to check the RAM on the thing before I go ahead and connect it to the internet (and potentially give the manufacturer an out if I complain about performance).

I've removed the preinstalled McAffee and will install ESET NOD32 before I connect to the internet.

Thanks for any advice

How much RAM does it have? Have both service packs been installed?

Check the event log to find clues as to what may be failing.

BTW Windows does come with a memory tester inbuilt, I've found it a bit basic but it works

Take it back.
Acer is the worst company there is. They use ECS motherboards in all of them.

Thanks for the advice guys - I did download memtest86+ and got it to run after a bit of fluffing about, all ok. It's better with McAffee gone, I think
