Help!!
When I'm browsing my music collection within Windows Explorer all my music file names are only four letters long e.g DGHS or WRTA. But within Windows Media Player they are all named properly. I need a program or some way to actually rename the actual file name. Please Help Me!!!

Welcome to PF1 - What happens if you go directly to the folder they are in , not using Windows Explorer Eg: My Documents / Music ( for XP) ?? or Vista <User name> /Music -- Or where ever you have them.

If they read incorrectly, right click the song / rename - type in the correct name.

Have they always had short names, or is it something that has just happened.

No Idea if This works (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2162882,00.asp) - says it will get the names from the tags, and do batches. The price is right - free.

Are they MP3s?

the reason windows media player shows the names is that the details are saved as tags on the file

You can view these tags in XP by right clicking on the file selecting properties then going to the summary tab and click on the advanced button

I use MP3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) to rename my files from their tags eg I like my files to be in the format artist-song-album.mp3, but as always make a copy of your files before you do anything

As noted above MP3 tag is a good program - Only took about a minute for me to rename hundreds of audio files from character names, based on their tags. Also tags in MP3's has other advantages for MP3 software - such as players displaying their info, organizers and duplicate finders, etc relying on tags to sort/find MP3's efficiently.
