I'm currently transferring files from my pc to a external harddrive. Vista shows me that the speed is 28.4MB/sec. Does this seem a bit slow? Cause to me it certainly does...

PC is
Intel 2.66Ghz Quad
4GB DDR2-1066
EX38-DQ6 Motherboard
1TB Western Digital Sata 2 internal hard drive
and transferring files to a 1TB USB2.0 Seagate external hard drive

Thanks

That wont be the speed of USB 2 itself, thats from the hdd to the external

Try enabling advanced performance

Run>devmgmt.msc>expand disk drives>double click your External HD>Policies>Select "Better Performance"

On some drives you can also enable "Advanced Performance"

Also try something like Teracopy, I find it much faster than the default windows copy handler:

Shouldn't the speed be faster though?
I thought sata 2 was meant to be 3gb/s? Surely it won't drop by that much?

Suppose it depends on how long it takes and how big the files are youre transferring. Probably didnt last long enough to get any higher

Well it's 100GB of data in total. It's still going with 30 mins left for about 30GB of data left to transfer. Speed has now reached 28.6MB/sec

Pass, I wouldnt worry about it, theyre still working after arent they. USB 2 maybe faster 1 way than the other. Unless USB 2 is on fullspeed in the BIOS (which is 12 mbps) instead of highspeed (480)

Yea i guess...oh well. As long as it gets transferred in the end it's ok. I was just checking to make sure my pc wasn't running slow or see if i could possibly speed things up xD
Seems to be at the right speed after what you guys have told me. So i'll just leave it at that.
Thanks guys

You forgot about the speed of the physical HD!

Even though the connections such as USB 2.0 and SATA 2 can reach speeds of a certain number doesn't mean it has to!

True. But i thought it would reach at least the specified speed eg a quick search showed 60Mb/sec is max speed for USB2...i would expect speeds to reach around 45+ if not more. Currently my speed is less than half of what it is capable of :(
