With this decline of British steel production I wonder if the poms will use chinese or indian steel for their rifle bayonets.
Cpl Jones would spin in his grave if he knew his bayonet wasnt British steel.

Yes sad, but until Western wages start to drop say by 5% a year and Chinese wages rise by 5% a year, this sort of thing will keep happening.
Capital has ALWAYS gone where wages are low - witness the British textile industry in the 1800's.

But I agree - countries like the USA and the UK need an industrial base in case a war started and they need to build some ships or tanks ! (or bayonets) (they need it up 'em!)

It's a changing world, not only steele but car industry has gone and god only knows what else.

The market must dictate or else we will have governments dictating and I suspect the market knows better than the likes of Helen Clarke and co.

Ship building was probably the biggest user of steel plate, but now that this has been gone for some years it was only a matter of time before the iron and steel industry collapsed. Shame really as it seems to signal the end of the Industrial Revolution in the UK. The UK has become largely a consumer rather than a producer of industrial goods.

Nothing grates worse than fingernails down a blackboard than the sound of a pommy politician or union leader speaking in NZ. The yanks have the idea have to be born in usa to be prez.
I am so glad that pommy deputy prime minister in the last clark labor governmenthas gone and but the good thing is I cant remember his name.

Buildings use lots of steel.
But in case anyone of those steel workers has not noticed there is a recession on (caused by fat cat greedy bankers) and nobody is building big buildings.
I feel really sorry for them.
