I have IE8 and Vista and I have just reinstalled flashplayer incase that was the problem.
My download speed with Orcon is 5Mbps.
Wonder what I am doing wrong?

If you mean buffering, thats normal. If you think Orcon is bad, dont change to Xnet :p

Once it starts playing hit pause then wait for the faded red bar to get nearly right across then hit play again

Thanks for the advice gary67 and Speedy Gonzales.

Have you been on any more tramps, Gary?

Sad about those two deaths (Te Papa director and friend)

Do a speedtest here and post the results link here:

www.speedtest.net

You claimed your speeds were 5Mbps

If that is correct, there should not be that much stalling on youtube.

Hi Blam,

It is download 5.05mbps
Upload 0.13 mbps
ping 79ms

I got my previous results from nzdsl.

It does seem strange to me that there is a problem with this speed

Try other browsers and other video sites.

No but I'm about to leave for Takaka hill to go caving for the weekend, although last weekend went to Salisbury Lodge for a short tramp

Hi,

have you tried using Firefox? It's way better than Internet Explorer,
because it's much. much safer, for starters, no Active content.

Just a thought.

Plus you can download YouTube videos with it very easily.

Or you could try Opera, as that's quite cool too.

I use all 3, but use Internet Explorer very rarely.

I get the same with the HD video from YouTube (Orcon as ISP).
At home Im on about 4.5mbps and play normal video fine. I QoS the hell outta my line so I watch the traffic like a hawk really ..

I try with the HD video and it just doesnt wanna. I need to pause and let it buffer for a fair bit extra before playing it.
At my parents place they're connected at around 16000kbps, and they actually achieve around 1.2MB/sec from international sites, but they still get the same playback issues with HD video from YouTube also :(

Hope your caving goes OK.

I used to enjoy walking on the Mt Arthur Tablelands.

Know very little about this, but heres my 2cents worth:
Seems to me if I download a file from an overseas site,(most of them) it goes like stink for a minute or so and pretty soon the speed slows down to about half, and stays that way pretty much for the rest of the download.
So Speedtest seems to be all over in about a minute, could they be missing the tail??
Secondly what is Speedtest measuring? the speed between you and your ISP or the speed between Youtube and you?
I thought there was some infrastructure between the ISPs mentioned, and a proper High Speed connection over the Internet (ie Telecom/Xtra)

I have been watching HD videos. at quite large resolution at some places,
I don't know the exact resolution, but the display panel must be 75%-80% of the browser window, and at full screen it's pretty good as well.

The kind of speeds I'm getting at this moment are:

11496 kbps up
00987 kbps down

Didn't get a result for ping though.
