View Full Version : Problems with Publisher

Hi Team

I am trying to transfer some complex diagrams drawn in Publisher 2000 into a Word document, something I do on a fairly regular basis without problems simply by copying the data off screen (not just using a copy of the screen image) and using paste special to dump it as an image. That generally works OK but these are unusually complex and have some fine lines drawn which disappear in the pasted version. They sometimes print ok but mostly they are missing and they tend to reappear (on screen) as the image size on screen is increased. If I increase the line thickness the problem goes away, but that stuffs up the aesthetics of the diagrams completely.

I know I am up against a limitation of this version of Publisher and I think I need to get a copy of Publisher 2003 because that allows pasting into word as HTML and hopefully that would solve my problem. My save-as options are strictly limited in Pub 2000.

Does anybody in Auckland have a redundant copy of Pub 2003 they'd like to sell? I can't just buy the latest and greatest because my computer is rather old and not compatible with a lot of modern programs, in fact it is too slow and has too little ram for anything much past 2003.

PM me if you can help please, Central & North Shore are preferred but I'll go pretty much anywhere within a 30K radius to get this monkey off my back.

Roll on the new computer, that will free me from a lot of limitations!

Cheers

Hi Billy. I transfer small diagrams, etc from Publisher to Word 2007 by clicking Print Screen or Ctrl+C to place a copy in the Clipboard, move to Word and Paste it from the Clipboard. Always comes out quite good.

Hi again. You could try Snagit, which I have used for some years. Cost you but it has a 30 day free trial - might last till you get your new system.......

I'll try some of your suggestions, but the problem is not capturing the image, that is quite straightforward and paste special>picture dumps it into Word ok too, it is the fact that the dumped image selectively omits elements of fine detail that is the problem.

I can easily do a print-screen capture as well, and had originally done this but it wasn't until I printed a draft copy that I found the resolution was so poor that text items that were perfectly clear in the original Publisher file (both on screen and when printed direct from Publisher) were unreadable in the inserted images.

The idea of sending the original Publisher files to a helpful member and getting them back in a word document sounds like a good idea, so long as the end result is compatible with Word 2000. I'll take PMs on that option if anybody is willing. God bless the Internet!!

I am currently watching for copies of Office 2003 on TM and if one comes up at an acceptable price I'll buy it. I have my eye on one at present but there is no way of knowing how high the reserve is!

Cheers

What about turning the pub file into a PDF with something like Bulzip pdf creator?

Well, I tried Snagit, but found the interface overly obtuse and in fact less flexible for screen capture than a simple select/control-c. It seems to be massive overkill for something as simple as screen capture, which print screen does in an instant.

No doubt it has good value for specialist applications, but it was no help for my problem anyway because it repeated the same effect, namely the images had missing lines from what was clearly visible on screen.

In the meantime I have discovered that my son's laptop has the full Office 2003 suite installed, much to my surprise, because when we bought it off TM a year or so back we were told it only had Word. So, I shall transfer my files to that and try again.

I suppose that next I'm going to find that Word 2000 can't cope with HTML!!

Cheers
