Righto, This is blatant spam in the guise of a question, as I could probably sort it myself in a minute or so if I wished.

Anyway, I'm in the middle of building a website, For a company, That company happens to be Mrs Metla, In a nutshell its nails,False nails and manicures and other stuff that women with too much money and time on their hands are into.

where was I...ah yes, I have a page entitled Indulgences, when viewed with IE its blank, when viewed with Firefox its all sweet potatoes and gravy.

Any ideas?

Not all the pages have content but if people want to view the site with whatever browsers they use it would be appreciated, Though in truth I prefer to treat minoritys harshly.

Bugger - didn't read your post carefully enough - it's just the Indulgences page you are having problems with. IE8 doesn't like it.

Try getting rid of the inline styles at the top of the page (looks like that page may have been created using Word or Publisher) - delete everything from <style> to </style>...

Then get a CSS stylesheet set up and linked to each page to control your fonts and sizes...

EDIT: You might need to get rid of all the crap "MSO" and similar inline styles in the body of the page too... In fact, just stripping out those nasty MS tags would probably be enough, but we may as well be tidy kiwis!!

ah ha, I copied the text from a word document I made earlier. I'll redo it.

And I have no idea how to set up CSS stylesheet:lol:

And I just noticed none of that damn prices match up with the services when viewed in Firefox, There are spaces in the content that weren't there before.:stare:

Maybe a slide show would look good; I notice your meta tag description is the same as the meta keywords - Google my frown on that. Your site may get pushed back in the serps (search engine results pages). Try to briefly describe your meta description so that it relates to your site's business or purpose.

The meta description will display the site's description in the serp's - and will attract visitors if it's appealing/relevant to targeted searcher's, i.e. a increase it hits (if you want that). Applying H1, H2 tags supposed to help SEO - i.e. to get your site ranked by Google in the serps.

Perhaps add a contact skype number if possible...

HI there,

Just validated the webpage for you. Congratulations for having NO CSS ERRORS for your page, which is a good thing (obviously). However, I think you might like to look at the HTML bit:

http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A%2F%2Findulgence.org.nz%2F

Not sure whether the link works, but it seems that it is not very happy about the following:

> Unable to determine Parse Mode (it shows up as "Quirks mode" on my Web Development toolbar)

>No DOCTYPE found

>No document type declaration; implying <!DOCTYPE HTML SYSTEM>

and the rest are about BORDERCOLOR is invalid attribute, ALIGN can't be centred, and no ALT for images.

Add alt tags to your images with reference/keywords to your business. This allows Google to read the alt tags, and will get indexed with the reference/keywords - which is more likely to increase visits from Google image searchers.

Something like: <img border="0" src="buttons/nails.jpg" alt= "Visit Indulgence.org.nz for a quality nail manicure" width="140" height="30"> (e.g for the hand image)

Uh, what's the difference? I think one uses HTML, and the other one uses XHTML. Their difference? XHTML is more strict on coding, and is less likely to cause errors (am I right?)

p.s. You made the website using table layout :confused:? And with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor? Oh, nothing. I thought tables were a bit old-fashioned nowadays. And they pump file size up as well (I think).

Indeed, I'd expect an expert to use expert methods, However I do feel Frontpage is an excellent tool for nubs to spit out perfectly fine websites. Not in the same league as what can be done but I dont believe that was ever its purpose.

Bickham Script Pro Regular? Just gone through my Fonts folder and I didn't see this font. Just be careful when using fancy fonts on internet: if the viewer does not have the font installed, they will only see it as their default substitutes (And they can be different within Mac, Ubuntu and Windows), and that can TOTALLY wreck the effects that you intend to create.

The host has got MySQL and PHP 5.2.6 support, although MySQL database is limited to only one.

Notepad++ is good, as it highlights all the things that it recognises for a HTML document. But you have to type in every single character in that, which is kind of unhelpful. No wonder why the original site is in tables: it's easier doing <div> than writing <table> <tr> <td> all over the place when writing own codes.

However, I support your choice, Metla, because graphical editing in Dreamweaver seems to spit out too much rubbish codes.

One would be enough if rob was just going to put it in a CMS, unless metla has other sites using databases on that host?

Here is how it is displayed in IE for me.

Just a thought, How hard is it going to be for me to edit the menu in the future?

Rob99
09-07-2009, 02:09 PM
The menu code is very standard and simple

<div id="navcontainer">
<ul id="navlist">

<li><a href="index.html">Home</a></li>
<li><a href="nails.html">Nails</a></li>
<li><a href="makeup.html">Makeup</a></li>
<li><a href="indulgences.html">Indulgences</a></li>
<li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
<li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>

</ul>
</div>

The code would be very similar if we were to use image replacement.

I would have guessed a few here would have scripting turned off, but would also guess 99% of everyone else would not.

Also with image replacement you would need to create a new image for the link, this way javascript does all the magic.

In other news, While googling to see if the current site had yet been indexed we discovered a business had popped up called Indulge. This Indulge offers a lot of the same services, and in a "**** me, I didn't see that coming" Its about 400m down the road from us.

So, The wifes project is now called Opulent Nails......:rolleyes:

Amazing it took 3 months to settle on the original name, and less then 10 minutes to pick the new one.

Now all I have to do is fin e a use for 500 business cards, 50 brochures, 5 sheets of loyalty cards, 50 appointment cards, 4 A4 sized speciality menus, and a URL....

Rob has been doing all the hard work! Good work mate!

But on my computer (FF 3.0.11), the fonts look too biiiiiiig (the CSS returned a font-size:40px line). And they ran out of the navigation bar you designed for it.

Check this out:

(I know that I don't have the font, but you probably have to consider these target audiences as well. Sorry for being too tough, but they look like Arial/Verdana kind of "Plain" San-serif fonts to me.)

Sorry to be so discouraging, but I think you forgot the "Indulgence" Page is still in Serif font. San-serif is much easier to read on screen.

Also, could you please sort out the subheadings? Right now they are all the same size, underlined.

Additionally, could you please put some padding in textboxes? I don't like the idea of texts stretching RIGHT up to the border of the table.

I know I'm being picky and stating the obvious, but PLEASE don't forget to do these small things, as they are quite a bit of impact. These things aside, the site is quite well laid out (I think), and has a lot of potential.
