It's improving, I wouldn't quite say brag worthy though. :p

Brag worthy is a GTX 265/4870 or higher and an i7. :D

Interesting choice of graphics card, did you get an especially good deal on it?

I wouldn't call that a monster - these days that's a reasonably performing machine for not too much money. A monster would be a $4k+ machine. Without looking it up I would think that system would come in under $2k.

2 machines in our household.

Mines got E8400 OC'ed at 3.6ghz currently, and 4850+4870

I work as a "techie" in the weekends to feed my techo lust....:p

Family machine is a Q6600 with a 4670.

Altogether both PCs excluding monitors costed about $2800

The other PCs in our house aren't worth montioning, and the servers are mostly just P4's or P3's....

No AMD in the family...:p

I don't.
I've had a 8800GTX, X850XT, X1900XT, 2 x 8800GTS and currently the 4870x2.
Apart from the SLI experiment I buy the best performing card at the current time.

Nvidia has the GTX295 now but it's not enough of a difference for me to care.

Next time I get one it might be ATI or it might be Nvidia.
I don't care, so long as its high end.

I'm about to take delivery of one of HP's new G6 servers, fully optimized for virtualization with dual Xeon CPU's @ 2.53Ghz, 12 GB RAM, 8 x 300Gb SAS drives in RAID 10 spread over 2 spindles - will run Server 2008 natively with 3 VM's on top of that running Exchange 2007, PayGlobal HRIS and our current Terminal Services box. G6, those arent the new i7 based Xeons are they?..ESX4 has those performing 30% more IOPS over ESX3 & 2008 Hyper-V!!....I guess with only 1 box you dont need vmotion!, however I would be tempted to use ESX4i instead of Hyper-V, I use Hyper-V as a desktop so I can run local VM's for testing, and TBH, it isnt a patch on ESX.

Yeah G6's are very new - the model I've opted for is kind of in the sweet-spot for price/performance at the moment.

I may end up putting Server 2003 on as the native Host O/S - as you say, Hyper-V isn't that great, and using Server 2008 for running VM's is kind of a waste.

Making my proposal to the owner tomorrow - pretty much a done deal, just have to argue the finer points.

I'm trying to come up with a simple way to explain virtualization to someone with NO interest or understanding of IT! ;)

ESXi is free and a great way to utilise all the power in that box. While Hyper-V is a good product, I just feel MS doesn't have the dependability you need in a virtualisation host (can anyone say patching?)....and using core is just too damn hard.

If we're really doing this...
How about 2xDVI, HDMI (with spdif demuxing), Displayport, S-video, Composite, Component (with picture in picture), 6 port USB, full 16.7m colours without dithering, 92% colour gamut with viewing angles like a CRT :D +HP 3 year onsite warranty

Having said that, the PC it is connected to is an Athlon 1800+, 1.5gb DDR, Geforce Ti4200. I benchmarked it a few days ago, the CPU is only slightly faster than a 1.6GHz Atom.
