Hi, I hope someone can help me with this!

I'm really not sure what's happened to my notepad, but I need some help. Basically, whenever I turn on my computer notepad starts up with over 30 loads, all with complete gobbledegook written inside - just a mass of symbols and numbers.
Notepad has also replaced most of the icons on my desktop and within my programs with the notepad sign, so that whenever I click on say Itunes, or Microsoft Word, or Internet Explorer, I don't get that program, but notepad opens up with the same jumble of symbols. I can't use half my programs any more, but the files are intact. So if I go to my documents, I can open word to a particular document, but I can't get into word via program list -> microsoft office -> microsoft word - all I get is notepad!

Please help! I really don't know what to do!

Hey, it sounds like your .exe files have been associated with notepad somehow.

Try the fix (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exeasso.htm) on this page.

It may have been caused by a virus so check that your antivirus software is up to date and run a full system scan as well.

Cyabro's Method should fix it, but I suspect deeper windows corruption or some malware.

Run sfc /scannow in command prompt(run>cmd) and insert your XP cd if it asks.

Then download HJT and post a log here:
