After doing a few speed tests I figured the speed of my Telecom/Xtra Dialup was slow. The Max it has ever been is about 5.5kbps.

Is this a normal result or is there something wrong?

Phone line is thru a 5m extension lead under the floor into a jack shared with a phone. That jack is third in the house and only shared by a monitored alarm.

Same speeds from other jacks in the house.

Sounds alright to me. What speed do you expect from dialup?? Thats faster than what I used to connect at, when I was on dialup.

That's pretty good, we used to average at 3kbps :(.

Yes, there is. I got a consistent 48k plus on dialup.

Your alarm MIGHT be causing the problem (they certainly do on broadband), can you connect the modem temporarily on the other side of it to try it out?

Or go next door and try from there.

Actually - do you mean 5.5kbps or 5.5kBps ???

Decibel: He'll be talking about kBps, in which case there's nothing wrong at all :).
