View Full Version : Why am I getting errors about Event 7000 in my Event Viewer log?

Hi all,

I've noticed when booting up, or restarting, often my computer shows a brief progress bar (dos-like) when it initially starts (before it ever gets to windows).

Similar to the progress bar it shows when PC wasn't shut down properly last time and it does a HD scan before booting. The progress bar looks the same as that, but there's no message. It only takes a second or to complete.

(By the way, the automatic reboot upon errors is turned off)

So, I guessed maybe there was some error on shutdown or start-up that caused this, so I had a look in the event viewer.
There are quite a few errors (going back many many months) that show Event 7000.
If I double-click them, there area few different variations, all event 7000, but with different messages. At the end of this post, I've copied three different ones.

Note that I am not actually getting any BSOD's, but it seems like something isn't right. I've tried Googling the errors, but there is sooo many different matches, each with different information, it's like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack.
The MS help link for that error message wasn't very helpful - it just said to try: Verify the service password has not expired (huh?)
Verify the service is in the correct location (how do I do that?)
Verify the service is not infected with a virus (I've run a full virusscan, all clean)

I've also ran scans on Malware bytes, and Super Antispyware, all good.
So I don't really know where to go from here... Any suggestions on what to try next?

Running Win XP Pro, SP3, fully patched.

Thanks

Working backwards -- the OMSCAN can relate to HP Open Mail server.

Click start/run type in msconfig under startup, locate it and untick, that should stop it from running on next reboot.

The other two
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service failed to start -- Parallel port driver service failed to start due both are ports / connections.

Does the printer if its a parallel one, and optical drive still work ??

What you may like to try is click start/run type in sfc /scannow ( note space between c /s) have your XP CD handy.

If that doesn't work, right click My Computer properties/ hardware Tab/ Device manager, expand out the optical drive - right click it, uninstall -- reboot teh PC, it "should" automatically pick up the Optical drive again.

Thanks for the quick reply.

There is nothing about HP Open mail server under startup. (There is hpztsb04.exe, but this is to do with my HP printer, so i'm guessing that one is okay to leave?)

And, the printer is actually a USB printer (which works fine).

Optical drive works fine too, I've got a CD reader and separate CD/DVD writer (both internal) and they seem fine..

I'll try the sfc / scannow next...

Hmmm, Wainuitech I tried everything in your post. Sfc / scannow seemed to work okay (it didn't specifically tell me any messages, it just scanned and then closed, apart from having to click retry a few times).
I then also uninstalled both optical drives, just in case, and then let Windows re-install them on next boot. It picked them both up again and reinstalled them - all good.

Checked the event viewer after the boot, and there are still the same errors (at end of post below).

Is there anything else I can try??

Thanks

Okay -- I wouldn't go mucking about dumping reg keys ( yet) it makes it kind of awkward to put it back if its required.

Reinstalling the Optical drive cured one of the errors--

Try this -- go back into the device manager, this time look for Ports (COM & LPT) - expand it out, uninstall the Parallel port - right click ECP print Port LPT1 -- Uninstall, reboot, it should pick it back up again, and hopefully fix that problem.

Next problem the OMSCAN service -- Lets see what it belongs to first-- click start/Control Panel/ Administrative tools / Services.

Scroll down till you find OMSCAN double click it, and see what it belongs to, you can also look at the dependencies Tab, to see what will be affected. Close the services box.

Next go into msconfig - Services Tab - (depending on what its running, you may want to tick the box " hide all MS services - these are sometimes needed, also thats the reason for looking before in the services as to what its to) Locate OMSCAN, untick it. Reboot.

By disabling it in the services you can always turn it back onagain if something doesnt work - removing it from the Reg means the program it is relating to may need to be reinstalled. If something stops working you may need to re -enable it.

Hmmm...

Under device manager, under ports, I don't have a LPT port. Only a Communications port (COM2). Should I try removing that instead?

Also I went into Services as you've suggested, and there is nothing in there at all that specifically says OMSCAN. So I'm guessing the relevant service that uses it, might be under a different name perhaps? How would I know which one it is?

wainuitech

Dont think it would help in removing the COM ports - the One its complaining about is the Parallel port which is the ECP.

The Following is ASSUMING you do have a Parallel Printer port on the Motherboard:

Try this -- Go into the control panel - Add hardware / keep clicking Next, it will scan the PC for new hardware - IF it finds the printer Pot it will install it, if Not, Select " yes I have already conencted the Hardware" -Next - Scroll down, Locate ECP printer Port (LPT1) -- Follow the Prompts.

The OMSCAN - in services, Did you look in the services Tab under MSCONFIG ? If not go in there and untick it - it should be there.

Somewhere its being told to run but isn't there.

Yep there is a parallel port on the MB.. the MB is old, it's a Asus A7V266.
I tried the adding new hardware option, it didn't pick up anything automatically. So I selected the option 'yes I have already connected the hardware, but there is no option for a printer port LPT1.
There is an option for 'Creative Game port' though, would this somehow be making use of the parallel port??

And yep I had a look both at the Services option through admin tools, and the services tab under MSCONFIG. There's definitely nothing that specifically says OMSCAN under either. It must be under a different name?
Here is a copy and paste of the services details. Sorry the formatting is all screwed up

Okay time to get down and dirty  Check on something:

DONT touch anything else - Playing with the reg CAn cause all sorts of problems .

1 Problem at a time - the Port -- Is the Printer port enabled in the BIOS ?

If So, click start/run type in regedit navigate

HKLM\System\Current ControlSet\Services\ParPort branch, set it's startup type to 4. (if its not already set to 4, if it is -exit out)

Down and dirty!

Okay, turns out the parallel port *was* disabled in BIOS. SO, I've now activated that, and then changed the registry value as you've said.
Quick look at event viewer doesn't show any errors relating to that upon boot now :banana

However, I am still getting the error about OMSCAN on reboot still...that seems to be the main recurring one now.

In the last boot, I've also got three new errors relating to the iPod service failing to start (the service did not respond in a timely manner, timeout while waiting, bla bla)... are these maybe just a fact of life with an old system that is slow, that sometimes not everything loads properly on boot?

wainuitech

Cool (and I dont mean the weather - Its bloody cold here in wainui ) ;)

Not to sure what the OMSCAN service actually is , every thing I have looked at says its part of an old HP utility.

Going back to Beeswax post earlier - delete the reg key.

OR make sure you have the latest Ccleaner - open it, go to Tools/Startup - see if its there, if it is Click it, then Disable - reboot other wise navigate to:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
Scroll down to OMSCAN and delete that key.

MAKE A RESTORE point Before deleting - just to be safe.

Regarding the ipod services - could just be slower due to windows Bloat - if it works OK, I wouldn't worry to much.

..and it's bloody cold where I am too! At least the wind has died down a bit now..

Cheers, I've deleted the registry key now and hopefully that'll stop the errors.
Thanks so much for the help, I'll keep an eye on it and post back if there's any more problems!

The parallel port error is probably appearing if your mobo doesnt have a parallel port on it (like this one). It doesnt have a parallel port onboard. This doesnt have an LPT port in device manager either. But the drivers installed for it anyway. I wouldnt worry about it

Thanks Speedy, the MB does have a parallel port, I think I've fixed that error by enabling it in the BIOS (previously it was disabled)
