Default IE 8 install problem (Win XP Home)

I have just downloaded and tried to install Internet Explorer 8. It gets to "Installing Windows Internet Explorer Core Components...", hangs there at 100% CPU usage for something like 10 minutes, and then says the setup did not complete. When I restart the computer and try again like it says to do, the same thing happens.

What's going on? Do I have to manually uninstall IE 7 first? I have tried disabling and uninstalling my antivirus program, which doesn't help.

Is there anything else in task manager thats showing 100% / or freezing?? You shouldnt have to uninstall IE 7, it'll install over it, and its updates.

I have just tried again now and looked at what was going on, by using Anvir Task Manager while it was installing. The CPU didn't seem to be used much this time, but the disk load was reaching 100%. The main thing that Anvir said was causing this was Windows Update, which was sometimes being replaced by Windows Service Pack Installer and then Windows Service Pack Uninstaller. This seems a bit strange to me - why would it be messing around with service packs (I have SP3, BTW) while installing an internet browser? All this was going on when it said it was installing Core Components, like I said in my first post. Obviously, it still didn't work.

You did get the correct version for XP ??

There are several versions, for XP, Vista and servers.

The XP and other downloads are Here.

I have also read several people have had problems if they have Adobe Reader 9 installed- they removed it and IE8 Went in fine.

And if any of the addons / programs here are installed, uninstall them / update them.

I have tried resetting IE 7, but that still hasn't helped.

Is this not a very common problem then? Would it help if I posted a HJT log?

I definitely got the XP version, and I have Foxit Reader.

It maybe a common prob if an add-on (that worked in IE 7) isnt compatible with IE 8. I didnt have any probs with installing IE8

Were any of those add-ons / programs, in that link installed?

You can post a log, if you want

No, I don't think any of those are installed except Google Toolbar and Windows Live Login Helper Object - which I have tried disabling (along with all the other add ons), with still no luck.

My Java version is only Version 6 Update 7 though. Would it be possible for that to be affecting the installation somehow?

    Here is my HJT log:

Is google toolbar the latest version??

You just go to manage addons in IE and highlight it then click on disable

No but I would uninstall that version of Java then update it

Uninstall Anvir or AVG, you dont need both

Tick these then tick fix checked

    Close browsers
