Question Nokia Charger, Black or White

Hi, Just a quick Question, I just chopped a nokia charger cable in half but have hit an issue is black or white positive or negative? i think white is positive(logic) but would rather not have 230v going the wrong way and ruining my nice shiny surge protector.
    Thanks

Exclamation Re: Nokia Charger, Black or White

If it is the style that has the pack on the plug where it plugs into the mains outlet, then it is not putting out 230VAC there, it will only be putting out the output that the phone requires on that part, but still if connected incorrectly will damage something.

You need a multimeter to test it to confirm for sure.

BTW, I hope you know enough about electronics, cause playing with something like that without knowledge of electronics can be very bad, if you get shocked by the mains, it can be very deadly.

If you don't know which wire is positive for AC then don't do it.

    Here's a hint: AC doesn't have a positive.

Yes, that is correct, but from what the description of where the cable was cut, sounds like it is in the part with the DC voltage, and getting these round the wrong way is bad.

I thought as much - but seemingly not being able to tell the difference doesn't help the chances of repair

a helpless random: I'm not trying to be nasty or anything, I'm just saying, by the looks of your post you didn't seem to know much about the charger. for safety's sake I don't recommend you do anything with it until you really know what you're doing.

I am assuming your charger looks something like this: http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/adaptor.jpg

In which case the cable which was cut would be the output, and is generally low voltage DC (or in some cases AC, though not likely for a phone charger). 230VAC will NOT be present on that cable (unless the charger was seriously faulty!)

Also, getting the wires around the wrong way would not send 230VAC 'the wrong way' into your surge protector. Most likely it would just ruin your phone by letting the magic smoke out

If the cable was cut somewhere in the middle, and you've got enough cable from both the charger and plug ends, you should be easily able to reconnect them with the butt soldering method as outlined here: http://www.mmxpress.com/technical/connections.htm

If the cable was cut close to the plug, then it could be easier to buy a new plug and attach it (making sure to get the polarity right - this is where a multimeter comes in very handy)

or, if the cable was cut close enough to the adaptor, you might get away with opening the charger and resoldering on the inside (if you're lucky enough to have a charger that goes together with screws, not just heat sealed). If it's the latter - might as well just buy a new one.

Thanks, i cut the cable after the adapter so it would be low voltage but i wont bother anyway. Thanks

I'm curious, what were you trying to do? Had you damaged it and were trying to repair it, or trying to jury-rig something together? If it's the former, better off just buying another one- Trademe is you friend, heck, even DSE or Cash converters... not worth the risk otherwise, and replacing phones (and usually reattaining contact details- am I the only one who syncs my PC with my phone?) is a PITA!

i.e. So that it would use less power?
