    Smile S Video VS HDMI

I recently purchased a s video cable for $50 that the original owner paid $150 for as my telstra decoder only has s video on the back of it as well as the Yellow RCA.
And i have a HDMI cable running from the dvd recorder to the tv.

Im running the s video cable from the decoder into the back of the dvd recorder and the picture comes out of the HDMI cable to the tv and i have noticed with loads of trials of my own that there seems to be very very little difference between the picture via either cable, which is making me wonder is HDMI turning out to be a load of hype. Im watching through a LCD Sony tv and no matter what i do with the settings the picture is still as clear with either cable.

Be very interested in your comments in regard to this setup.

Well if your souce is standard definition you may not notice anything different, although HDMI may be better for HD video.

Remember HDMI also integrates the audio so is it better in that respect at least

Also s-video is analogue and HDMI is digital.

HDMI has the potential to be better, provided it's setup properly and your signal source is good.

    HDCP - not so good

I know s video is analogue and HDMI carries sound as well as picture but the point im making is the difference in picture varies very little despite the fact i have tried both cables on their own as well as together.

Interesting! I found very little difference between S-Video and component when I set up my LCD. However, there seemed to be a noticeable difference between component and HDMI. HDMI was definitely crisper.

Depends a heck of a lot on what you are playing. I was using HiDef captured via IEE1394 downscaled to Standard Definition from my Sony HC3 camcorder to a Sony HDD recorder. Then to the TV via HDMI. Logically HDMI should be sharper.

Low quality in = low quality out. Your signal input from your telstra decoder into your DVD recorder is of low quality (as compared to an HDMI signal). Having a high quality cable from your DVD recorder to your TV will not 'upgrade' the signal.

However, the HDMI will work great when watching DVD's.

I dont have much of a choice its either s video from the decoder or the yellow rca socket which is even lower quality and telstras decoders don't have component so i have to put up with s video through HDMI cable for now realising i know the quality of the s video signal won't be any better just because its going through the HDMI cable.
