    Default MicroSoft Access won't start

Long story, but PC crashed and rebuilding it. Installed XP Pro, installed Office XP but Access will not run. When I click the icon, a dialog box pops up that says "Please wait while Windows configures Office XP Pro" and on the bottom gathering information is displayed for about 2 seconds then the dialog goes away and nothing happens. Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint all work.

I installed winXP fresh and am trying to get to my databases for xmas cards and my dvd collection.

    Welcome to PressF1.

What happens if you open your database directly rather than opening up Access first and then browsing to it? Are you opening up Access off the Start Menu or off a desktop icon?

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Access?

Yes, uninstalled and reinstalled. Did the repair from add/remove programs. Installed just access, but still no luck. I was having trouble installing Office XP SP3 from the windows update site and just installed it by going to MS download center. I tried Access from the start menu after SP3 was installed and still get same result as described in original post.

Try leaving the Office CD in the drive & then open Access - it may be trying to retrieve files from the CD to complete installation - this common

Hi and welcome to Press F1!

I realise this won't solve the problem but a quick and dirty workaround in the meantime would be to import the data into Excel using menu option Data > Import External Data > Import Data > Files of type : 'All' > navigate your way to the database and see if you can access the tables. If you can do this then at least you haven't lost your data.....

{Edit} P.S. you mentioned the update - have you tried doing a system restore to a time before the update?

    See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825941

If you still have problems then it could be how MSAccess was registered in the registry. Search for regsvr32 MSAccess on MSKB or Google but there are quite a few DLL's that could be the problem.

I put in the Office XP CD and the dialog box stays up longer and looks like it is reading files but it closes the box and still nothing happens. I searched knowlege base and nothing seems obvious.

I found the solution and thought I would post it here in case anyone else is reading this thread. I found it (with much help) at:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265194

I used method 3 where you rename msaccess.exe and system.mdw and then run Access. The program will copy files from the install CD and Access runs fine now.

Thanks for posting back with the solution that worked for you. As you say, it may help others with the same problem in future.
