    Default "Mini -XP" installation

    Hi all

Have any of you heard of a "Mini-XP" installation?

I have been given a disc by a mate which apparently has a stripped out version of XP ready for an unattended instal.

This is what the included text file says about it

    "Mini-XP"

    Windows XP Pro SP2 Unattended

Thank you for your interest in this stripped out 125Mb
Edition of XP. I clocked mine in Task Manager using
only 49Mb of RAM. Windows XP usually uses 300Mb of
RAM at the best of times. This "Mini-XP" takes up
only 500Mb total space on your system's hard drive.

By using only 50Mb of RAM, this allows
your PC to run fast, I mean VERY fast!

All important hardware drivers and other essentials
have been kept in this release - no more problems
with those stupid Alcatel stingray modems. You have
joystick support, printer support, ISDN, and other
bare essentials. This Windows XP Edition CAN have
MS Office installed, it is also supported! You still
have your calculator, Wordpad and of course, MS Paint.

GONE is that nasty Internet Explorer! It does not
exist in this Edition. You will have to install
Firefox or Opera or any other browser to access
the internet. ALSO GONE is Windows Media Player.
You will have to grab some kind of player from
somewhere if you want to play stuff. GONE also
are all Windows noises like startup and shutdown
noises, but audio does work. However, there is
no support for scanners in this Edition.

This XP Pro SP2 Unattended is tiny @ just 125Mb!

Its proberly a slipstreamed version with an answer file on the cd which strips out elements of xp such as games, microsoft network client, QOS and other eye candy (screen savers and themes) (nlite is one utility that can do this, microsoft also provide a not so advanced version also, on the xp install cd).

I hope you trust this person because answer files when used with an xp install are a powerfull tool. Software that you are not aware of, can be installed without your knowledge using answer files.

Be warned there is also a VERY ILLEGAL stripped down version of xp which runs off cd. Simular to linux live cds.

A bit of advice if I may, scan that cd with a reliable virus checker before using it.

I don't really get the point of it all.
Memory is cheap and the smallest hard drive you can get is about 40 GB.

It is handy to have IE for those websites that are just plain broken.

Using less memory has nothing to do with CPU usage. Heck, the task manager uses more CPU than a large raft of XP services on my PC.

    Heh, is spyware included ?

Whats wrong with having a reduced file sized XP CD?
Come on, do you honestly want all that bloat included with XP?

Not everyone has a >= 80GB HDD and lots of Ram.

I think the smallest XP CD I've found was 80mb.

Then again it was only basically functionable.

what was this abuot answer files?
is it something you can just replace in your existing CD, so while makign a streamlines unattended install CD you put in the answer file and thus dont download any pirated content?
if so can i have a link?

Try Nlite It is a program for making a customised version of your Windows 2000/XP CD.
    I swear by it.

It can integrate service packs, drivers and other programs as well as strip off unused Windows components. Games that come with Windows for example.

When done it will make a ready to burn ISO image.
Bundle it with RyanVM's Post XP Service Pack 2 Updates and you have a lean mean Windows Machine.

and that will do away with IE and wmp?
aswell as intergrating sp2 into a sp1a CD along with making it unattended.
    Meh

Yes, though I think this program REALLY wipes IE off the newly created CD. Crashes galore I think.

You can definitely remove WMP 10 and 6.4. as well as integrate SP2.

Now how to get this running in VMWare

He's asking about a slip-streamed copy of XP, not a pirated version.
