    Default About Avast

    Hi,
I've installed Avast. Does it scan incoming mail using Thunderbird? I know it mentioned Outlook.
    Thanks Pauline.

    I am sorry I don't know.

I'm not inclined right now to download and install thunderbird to find out.
Avast works for me so far.

    Hi Pauline

I found this list of Antivirus compatible programs for Thunderbird - here. It looks like it should work fine if you have version 0.9 or 1.0+ of Thunderbird.

From Avast's website (my emphasis in bold):

E-mail/News protection consists of two independent modules; first, there is a generic scanner working on the SMTP/POP3/IMAP4/NNTP protocol level. It is capable of protecting any existing e-mail client that uses these protocols. Second, there is a special plugin for MS Outlook only; the mail scanning is completely transparent, requiring no special settings.
I use Eudora myself and it works very well.

if you run win9x/me it uses the old 127.0.0.1 style of connection for the scanner which seems to be causing me a few problems so back to AVG for me.
    Tweak it till it breaks

Avast scans Pegasus emails on WinXP for me. AVG did not.
I would think Avast would do Thunderbird, except for Tweak's comment above.

    Thanks for the replies,
I was expecting to see something to say that it was scanning incoming mail or having a verification thing on the email.
It did say that it checked Outlook/Exchange.
So far I am impressed with it. It found a Trojan that's been in Temp Int files since Nov last year, AVG never showed it up.
