Thread: Free DVD codec

    Default Free DVD codec

    Hi,

One of our PC's at work has a DVD RO<, but Media Player 9 won't play the DVD because a codec isn't installed.

What is the best FREE codec to install?

Will Divx alone install the right codec?

AFAIK for media player to read encrypted DVD's you have to install a 3rd party DVD player. Mediaplayer will then work fine.

Try the videolan client. Has all the codecs you will ever need built in.

    Region-Free too

DivX will allow playback of DivX compressed MPEG4 movies. DVD is MPEG2.

    basicly yes.

however you need to remeber that mpeg2 is a lienced system so most mpeg2 codecs you have to pay for. thats why there is so few good free dvd codecs advailable.

you missed the point. the companies payed the leicence fees etc and they made and released a free codec. totally legit. not warez or any hacked/modded/etc. they are free for download off the companies website. no keys/regs/money required. totally free and totally legal.

the reason no one uses those particular codecs is they are crap and the later paid/warez ones are better.

Hmmm...Due to it being licensed technology every device capable of playback of a DVD has to have a license fee which goes back to the license holder built into the price, Due to the fact that a computer DVD player might only be used for Data the license fee is built into the software , which is why just getting a codec from any source circumvents the payable fee and makes it illegal, The license holder would be nuts to sell the rights to a party who intended to distribute it royalty free, Infact it just wouldn't happen.
