how to format a partition tht contains a pagefile

Hi.
I'm trying to format a partition that has a 1gb pagefile on it.
I've tried using Partition magic, windows explorer, and Computer management - but none work.
Also the partition is where all my games are installed - i copyed over the partition to my new hdd using norton ghost - but i looked at the new parttition - and theres no page file on there. will my games still work?

Hi fergie,

First of all you have to tell Windows to move the page file, more information needed on your OS but assumptions say Win2K/XP, so

Right-Click My Computer choose properties select advanced tab.
Under Performance choose settings then select Advanced tab.
Down the bottom in Virtual Memory choose change.
Select the drive it's on, (note what is setup) choose No Paging File,
and then on another drive you can put the pagefile on it (with what was noted)
Restart your computer, delete the old pagefile and then format as normal

Hopefully that helps.

Your games will should still work, as long as you have enough RAM available for the game.

I down what you said - but i tried copying the file over to the other drive - but i still can't.
I thought if i restart - it'll be deleted - or will that be ok? do i need that exact same file?

The pagefile is a temporary file. Anything stored in it is valid only during the current session. When you shut down, that's it. You don't copy it. If you turn off "virtual memory" you can delete the current pagefile ... it isn't valid any more. If you then use the OS's option to make virtual memory on another drive, it will make a new file.

Sorry Fergie,

Didn't explain my methods corredtly.


When you select No Paging File, that's it, in the next restart, you'll have no page file on that drive, the file however will still exist, it doesn't get cleaned up.

What I meant by copying the settings, was to actually select another drive in the settings there and create a pagefile on that drive. But only if it's neccessary.

Then when you reboot, you should be able to delete the swapfile.
