Default Compaq Presario LapTop won't charge battery

    Hi
Before I spend exorbitant amounts of $$ on commercial repairs.... is anyone aware of a (?simple) reason why a Compaq Presario 1650 LapTop (with a new and tested battery, now twice replaced) wont charge the battery. The laptop operates, displays the 'charging' LED (though this intermittently blinks as if just started charging) but on unplugging you have a flat battery and immediately the laptop has to save and shut-down. Doesn't matter how long the laptop is plugged in for, whether in use or not. All the LED indicators are appropriate.
My Laptop is no longer portable ie. not much bloody use!! HELP.

if u have tried a 2nd batt take it to a shop and ask a quotte forst telling them what u did. motherbooard may need replacing. may be cheaper to sell and buy another.

    is it still under warrantee?

I don't know much about laptop MBs but it strikes me as curious that the battery charger would be on board. I guess the fact that the computer operates off the external PSU shows that that section is OK, so it is only the interface between the power in and the battery that is potentially at fault.

These are quite complex battery packs so I'd look to see if the connections on the PC are in good condition too.

If you can find a "real" electronics technician the charger circuits should be repairable, but if you get a "computer" technician (no disrespect intended, just horses for courses) it may be a bit harder to repair economically as it may become a module/board replacement activity.

IMHO the best bet is to try Compaq or a notebook/laptop repair specialist. Phone and pick their brains first.

    Cheers

I had a Compaq laptop till about 3 years ago. It had on-board power supply / charger.
I too would look closely at the battery connectors on the PC itself.
If nothing is amiss, it sounds expen$ive as it will need to be sent to a Compaq service agent, as access to the required documentation may be needed and thats not always available at a local repair shop level.

Some laptops that I have seen have the charger board seperate from the mainboard so this is probably all that would need replacing.
But if it is not seperate then it will need a mainboard replacement and this is quite expensive.

I have had problems with "clever" chargers which won't charge batteries which are below a threshold voltage (such as brand new NiCds which have no charge at all). My technique (crude) has been to blast some charge into the batteries from a lead acid. :O

It is odd that the lights seem to show that all is OK. I'd expect poor conections to the battery to cause the system to not show things as OK.
