Default Help in putting a faded "Sample Only" behind text in MS Word

I am writing this guide and got to the last stage (almost) where I attach the relevent forms behind each relevent parts of the text throughout the guide.

The way that I am doing this is that I have electronic copies of the forms and have copied and Special Pasted each form to a page. In doing this I have changed the form to be an "object", in the sense that MS Word 97 uses the term. Why I have done this is so that I can reduce the size of the form to 90% of the original.

Now I want to put large font light gray words (ie Sample Only) behind the text on each form but so that the full text on the forms still shows in front. This means putting one object (the Sample Only) behind the main object ie the reduced form.

I have spent close to two hours trying to do this (and many more hours on the forms aspect overall) but have not been able to do. Someone mentioned that it is done as a "watermark" but this does not seem to have worked.

I am using Windows ME and MS Word 97.

    Help please !!

Have you tried WordArt and then formatting it to appear behind the text?
    This also works for images/etc

    Hi Cyberchuck
I used WordArt only at first and had no joy so then I used a text box and inserted the WordArt into it. As i recall it was doing this that made it an object. I used the option of not showing the line around the text box.

So you formatted the WordArt it to appear behind the text? - I can't really help you out with as to how Word97 does it's formatting considering I use OfficeXP sorry.. however what I do is make the Word Art, Format > WordArt > Appear Behind Text and then stretch it to fit

Not sure if this will work in Word 97 as I don't have it installed but I'm sure it's there.

Open Word then click Format, Background, Watermark.

You could always ( in Word ) type in Watermark in Help as I'm sure this is how you do what you want.

Thanks for those thoughts Elephant - though watermark is not reached in Word 97 through format > background. Instead, the help menu which I had tried before shows to go into header\footer but using this approach does not work with an object ( or I have not been able to discover to date). It only works with a word standard document.

Actually i could probably fix the standard electronic forms by going back to square one and putting in the watermark before changing to an object.
However I will still have the problem in some cases because I do not have electronic copies of a couple of forms (and leaflets) and have had to scan. I found i could not put the results of the scan straight into word. What I did was to open the scanned document in Internet Explorer and then copy and paste the result to word, which gave an object.

Actually I made a slight error before in saying that the WordArt in the text box is an object, whereas it is actually a "picture". This means I am trying to put a picture behind an object !!

Thanks Cyberchuck for all the attempts at giving me that particular link - however although the part you did not put in did not seem to make a difference, what was left did not get me to the suggested webpage.
I must try your other suggested links.

A bit of a breakthrough - I have managed to put "Sample Only" behind text in a standard document by using the header and footer - so I will be ok (though have to go back to square one and re-do) for the forms that I have electronic copies for.

The main problem of putting the picture behind the object still remains - for the forms that I had to scan.

    a bit happier !

Got there for the scanned forms as well. I found that by only using two dimensional (and not three) and making the WordArt transparent you can see the text underneath through the WordArt.
