Windows Cabinet File Antivirus Scans

Hi...

I am using win98SE and want to know if it's ok to delete "c:\windows\options\cab\files..heaps of them!(even temporarily to the recycle bin). I think these are windows cabinet folders, which I read somewhere that they can be safely deleted. It's just that they take a long time to scan with my antivirus program (AVAST 32). Or should I somehow instruct AVAST not to scan them?

Those are the windows Setup files.
If you've got your Windows CD, by all means delete them if you want.
They just make life a little easier for those who frequently need to install new drivers etc... for their PC, so they don't have to find the CD each and every time.
You CAN safely delete those files, But I'd make sure you have your Windows CD first of all!

No real need to scan your drives if AV is set to scan EMail & down loads. Maybe only once on first install.

and make sure it is a proper Windows disk NOT just a Restore Disk

My Norton Anti Virus has options to not scan certain files and if I wanted to I could add the .cab files to that list.

Maybe your AV has something similar?

Yeah...I think you are right (never thought of blocking folders for scans!), but just getting familiar with avast32's setup procedures...bit tricky I guess. Their conversion to english needs touching up (has spelling mistakes in dialogs/help files)...
