    Ah no.
I sure didn't have her sit there reading the directions as I drove. She was only 7 at the time.

She had a map print out in case I needed it (not owning a smartphone). And she noticed it had the takeaway shop marked on it, so thought she was pretty cool pointing out the turn straight after it.

Not the same thing as turn left there, drive another 200m etc etc.

Ok, but I'm assuming the route was marked on the map somehow and that's how your granddaughter knew where the turn was? If so that's the exact same route the GPS version of google maps would have taken you so even though you don't use a GPS you are using the same information as I would with my smartphone and turn based instructions.

    No.
    I just printed the map.
I told her (after we had gone most of the way), to look out for X street coming up on the right.
This street was past the McDonalds, which was shown on the map....I didn't realise the mcDonalds was on there...She remembers it every time now, she says, remember turn past (it)....

I use a GPS all the time and find it brilliant. Have never had a problem with it.

Only at night or in winter, but anyone who takes a normal motorhome down there seriously needs their head checked.

I have my GPS on all the time mainly for giving directions to emergency vehicles when coming across an accident in an area where I am unsure of my position.

The Lat-Long. position is handy for ambulances and rescue helicopters.

Haven't heard of others using this facility.

I think buses or their central office use Lat/long GPS system for tracking. The App Track My Bus for Auckland Transport seems spot on for every bus stop; Google Maps also has a active position route map for buses within the timetable
