Give it to the police and suggest they get the data off it as evidence?
My mate has one of these ( http://www.swannsurveillance.com/s/p...w/?product=364 )
Someone broke in moved the cameras and damaged the dvr and he is trying to get the data off the hdd. It shows up as unallocated space in linux.
Any ideas?
Give it to the police and suggest they get the data off it as evidence?

What if you connect it to a windows system??
Linux should read it if it's a windows partition. I just mean if you give it to the police it might save you the hassle of spending a thousand dollars on data recovery.

ask at http://www.cctvforum.com/
usually a manufacture will have pc software that can read the HDD. otherwise ask swans tech support.
Tweak it till it breaks
Most likely it was encrypted (for protection) its like a bitlocker drive will show up in pre 7 OS's as an unformatted drive.
The full drive encryption means that any OS will not be able to read the headers or any drive info so it thinks its empty/free space.
You will probably need to talk to someone at the aforementioned CCTV forums or possibly swann security in order to safely recover all the data
