Default Laptop screen has dark blotches and how to get rid of them...?

    Hello,

I wonder if anyone here can tell me why my laptop screen has dark blotchy patches on it. I thought they were just grubby surface marks or dust at first but when I got around to cleaning the screen properly, I see that they appear to be under the top layer of the screen. They're not so noticeable if I'm just watching a movie or surfing, but with a white or pale background they get to be really annoying. I took photos of it but it looks like I'm not allowed to post them here...

I've had a google around without a definitive answer as to whether I can just take the screen apart myself and clean it, get it repaired, or have to replace it altogether to eliminate the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    btw, it's a Toshiba Satellite Pro P100

I had the same issue on one of my older laptops, after a lot of googling it turned out to be patches caused by pressure applied to the back of the screen, i.e. from being squeezed in a laptop bag, annoying but nothing can be done to fix them afaik

If the LCD panel has been damaged by pressure etc the only cure is probably to replace it

Could it be that books have been stacked on it or the likes creating pressure points?

Unlikely due to dead pixels on the screen thou if they are patches...

    Hello again,

Thank you all for your replies and apologies for the double post - not sure how that happened...

Anyway, I have uploaded a picture here(thanks Speedy). You should be able to see the blotches I mean.

The only pressure I can think of that fits with the possible cause above is from being in my laptop bag, though I don't think it was ever much, if any, more than bag against body whilst over my shoulder. It has never had anything stacked on top of it whilst closed either. It seems a bit lame that a portable device should be damaged easily from being carried around in a bag.
If caused by pressure on the LCD panel, is screen replacement the only cure?

Anyway, thanks for your feedback - I was hoping for a painless solution but it seems I may have to just put up with it for now.

To be honest I don't know what causes this problem. Pressure could and probably does but of course that doesn't mean it happened here.

Then again, pressure could be applied from the design of the laptop itself, or bad manufacture of the LCD panel, not nessecarily anything to do with the way you have used it. (I have heard of LCDs that were cracked due to overtightening of screws in the factory)

Moisture getting into the LCD could be one theory as could another that the LCD itself was just badly made and after a while the colour purity goes off, resulting in the strange blotches. Large variations in temperature might also cause this.

One of those programs that generates a special colour pattern in an attempt to fix stuck pixels may work if the problem is similar

Unless you know the cause, and it is fixable eg: damp conditions resulting in mildew growing inside the LCD which could be repaired by cleaning, I think the only way to fix a problem like this would be to replace the entire LCD panel. Fortunately there can be some good deals to be had for generic replacements from eBay and online overseas shops etc.
