    Default Vacuum cleaner cord retractor

Someone may know. The cord retractor on our vac no longer retracts the full cord. Its getting worse and driving us nuts.

Any suggestions for a fix without major repair stuff?

    Thanks

Make, model & age would be helpful, my crystal ball is away being cleaned, but usually that means the spring is getting weak. Either that or your cord is full of kinks and isn't winding evenly.

It is not a big issue either way, just coil the lead up outside the machine, it is much cheaper than a repair or replacement.

    I agree with Billy.

Stuffed retractors on vacs are so usual that it's better to just live with the issue.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
Its usually a doddle to open the machine up and rewind the cord and re-tension the spring.
But its a bugger to get it all back together again.

Thanks..... We just might manage as it is! For interest, sake top of the range vac- nilfisk. I thought it might have lasted longer, but that's life in the fast lane when your slowing down!

I second this. getting it all back together was a pain. PJ

Sometimes just cleaning the cord rather painstakingly will give a tired rewinder a few more weeks of life.

I agree it's so common you just end up manually winding it round the outside of the machine.

Every time I have tried to re tension retractors on electrical things it has ended in tears. Lawn mower ones can be a pain in the arse especially when the spring flies out and hits you in the face.
I am only guessing but at the factory they probably have a jig or tool that holds it together whilst it is assembled.
I suppose pushing the cord back in the last few metres is better than no retract at all after a failed repair attempt.

Just about lost it a few times with lawnmower starter springs. Those things fly a bloody long way when you let them go.
