Re: Why has my ping time increased?

I'm not sure I understand all that. What is the connection between ping and stability? And why did you mention restarting the modem - that is something I very rarely do. So does increasing the...

Re: Windows 10 --- Latest Tech Preview

The pace is hotting up! New build 16294 (fast ring) downloading now. Interesting comment in the blog - some people may not get it straight away. I have two going though.

Re: Fibre - is it worth it?

I didn't say which was correct - just which was more prevalent. No disrespect to SurferJoe (I know he had tongue in cheek) but I do get a bit irritated with the assumption that the American way is...

16291 on its way (not skip ahead). Mostly bug fixes, but a new feature where Cortana users can now resume articles, news from their iPhones and Android phones to PC from within the Cortana app.

Re: Fibre - is it worth it?

See my original post. I spelt fibre the way most of the English-speaking world spells it - sorry if that upsets you...

    Re: Speedtest - question

My theory is that the default server is chosen to be near whoever owns the range of IP addresses that contain my IP address. So, my ISP is Wellington-based Actrix (now part of Voyager) so the...

Re: Why has my ping time increased?

I test it with Speedtest. I just use the default location. I'm not complaining about the ping, just interested in why it might have changed - as I said, in practical terms it makes no difference.

Why has my ping time increased?

When I first got VDSL my ping was about 16ms. These days it is usually 40-50ms. I'm not a gamer so in practical terms it really doesn't matter, but I'm interested why it might have deteriorated.

    I...

    Speedtest - question

My ISP is in Wellington and I'm in Auckland. When I run Speedtest the graphic shows my location as Wellington.

My question is: When I run Speedtest does it communicate directly with the Speedtest...

    Re: cordless or corded chainsaw?

I know this is a bit OT, and it also shows I'm not a dyed-in-the wool good Kiwi Joker, but I've always been very nervous around chainsaws. I've never really used one, but I know of some horrific...

Re: Fibre - is it worth it?

I'm not so sure. Where fibre is newly on the street I think connection will always be free, but maybe after a while new connections to old-ish fibre may cost. Then again if Chorus want to move people...

Well yes, that is true for almost everyone, but doesn't mean you have no alternative today.

Re: Fibre - is it worth it?

You've pretty much summed up the gist of this whole thread. Reasons to get fibre:

You are a gamer and/or major streamer/torrent freak
    The only alternative is ADSL
    It is probably more...

Re: Fibre - is it worth it?

Your comment is interesting because the common wisdom is that once people have access to the faster speeds they tend to use it. I don't think I need faster speeds either, but maybe if I did I'd...

Re: Fibre - is it worth it?

I can certainly see that for gaming, streaming etc there would be advantages in the faster speed/lower ping (my ping is 40-50msec) and of course you are right about fibre being the way of the future,...

Fibre - is it worth it?

This is a purely hypothetical question for me as we are not going to see fibre until about 2022, but I wondered whether in the real world where there are many possible bottlenecks in delivering...
