I wonder if my backed up to CD OE emails from the earlier 98se days
not to mention todays backup are at the mercy of Bills operating system ?
MS file types only...

should I export to say TBird as well ?
so if MS wants to require a chip in my head before startup...
at least I can see them in TBird ?

spose printing them out on paper is pretty good...
heck of a lot of paper :)

It sure would be. I just have one backup, but I suppose if you are really worried you could just leave a copy on your mail server as well (ie. tell your email client not to delete them after they are downloaded).

That would depend on how long the mail server retains mail. Many ISPs delete read/unread mail after a certain number of days.

You could always auto forward all mail to a Yahoo or GMail account.

Rather have them on CD and hard drive than online
Just wondering about best format...
like in say ten years time,
will my old OE mail be viewable by something ?

Microsoft have always proivided a Backup facility. They have seemed to always manage to make the recovery software not able to read backups from earlier versions. ;)

Not that I've tried, but I'm sure some linux expert will be able to open those files.

Thunderbird and Firefox can be backed up or moved to a different computer with MozBackup (http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/).

Thunderbird is a good choice as all messages are stored in plain text format.

To view just open in your editor of choice.

To archive just zip them up and put them where ever. Oh, just to be safe, be sure to include an unzip util. You never know...
