Does anyone know the maximum size hard drive that windows xp will support? I heard it was 160GB.

No its 137 GB without SP1 or 2.

After either one of these have been installed, it can be as big as u want the hdd to be.You can have 200gb/250gb +.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013

It also depends on how old your system / bios is.

The older it is (your system), the less chance of it recognising a big hdd.

And formatting in NTFS helps. If u have 2000 or XP +.

I get away with :
4 / 200 gig on RAID 0+1,
4 / 200 gig on JBOD and
1 / 40 gig for my opsys...
all on XP-PRO, SP's up to date. (I didn't build it, don't ask how)

Depends on the type of file system you are using...

FAT32 supports up to 2 TeraBytes
Natively NTFS will support 2 TB and with cluster size tweaking will handle up to 16 ExaBytes

It will read them once created, but.. it won't let you create the things. FAT32 is fairly useless on big partitions anyway.

See what MS have to say about fat limitations in XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314463)

I have a 500Gb drive, and just installed XP on it, but only see the 137Gb by default. So, how do I now either increase the size of the existing partition, or add a new partition to the drive without messing up my fresh install? Can somebody walk me through the process?

You'll need something like Gparted or Magic Partition.

Is SP1 or 2 installed?

Whats the specs of this system? How old is it? Is the BIOS updated on it?
