This article (http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid=%7BCB1AB36C-D097-4451-93C4-A19141400FB5%7D&siteid=google&dist=google) , spotted on Slashdot, speculates what Google is up to in view of it's hires of Aucklander Ben Goodger (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?c_id=5&ObjectID=10008349) (lead Firefox software engineer) and Rob Pike from Bell Labs (helped develop the OS Plan 9). A Google browser based on Firefox is probably a safe thing to assume for reasons given in the article, but a Google OS? What for? The article also list some interesting Google tools, such as the Microsoft search tool. I knew about the linux and bsd ones, but not a MS one. There is also the network-computing effort I did not know about, which is the same type of thing as the SETI and Cancerbusters projects. And lastly, can anyone tell me what this (http://www.google.co.nz/firefox) is for?

Good on Ben :). He has been known to cruise PF1 occasionally.

I see one of his fellow Mozilla team mates, Darin Fisher has also joined him at Google now - announcement (http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=5977). Seems Google is really expanding into other areas.

That Google/Firefox search front page is interesting ...

Perhaps similar to this (http://www.google.com/microsoft)?

Perhaps similar to this (http://www.google.com/microsoft)?
Or this (http://www.google.com/mac)?
Or this (http://www.google.com/linux)?
Or this (http://www.google.com/unclesam)?
Or this (http://www.google.com/bsd)?

I guess there are probably others?

Mike.

And lastly, can anyone tell me what this (http://www.google.co.nz/firefox) is for? It's the default homepage for FireFox, and was setup by Google to help mark the launch of FireFox 1.0

Edit: And the news about gbrowser.com was out ages ago, seems that this is just a logical progression.

It's not the home page for Firefox; it does have a link to that.

It's a Google "Special Search". They have quite a few: US Governemnet, PUblick Services, Linux, BSD, Apple Macintosh, Microsoft, ... but they aren't all listed on the page you get by following "more/Special Searches" fromt he Google opening page.

The default home page of a browser is a settable option in the browser. If whoever supplied George's browser set that Google page as the home page, that's probably a recognition of Google's recognition. They would hardly give an MSN page as the default home page. ;) But it's not the "Firefox home page".

The home page of Firefox is the entry point for the Firefox system. It is at www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/central.html. That's where that "Firefox Start" page at Google sends you when you click on the "Firefox 1.0" link. Until you click on that or one of the other links on that page (which also go to www.mozilla.org) you are in Google.

It's set up to get you quick results if you want to make Firefox related searches.

Mm, I just meant that Firefox 1.0, downloaded from Mozilla, has that Google page as the home page - until you change it of course.

That's what I meant by 'default home page'.

I don't think it is a "special Search" at all - there doesn't seem to be anything special or specific about it like the other "special searches". Try using it - it is just the generic search function. It is not firefox-specific. I am still no closer to an answer. Maybe it is in development.

It's just a home page for Firefox made by Google. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not the same as my Firefox default homepage, before I changed it that is.
