Greetings ladies,fans and apostles.

Just thought i would show a youngster how to build and publish their first website, Whipped off to Orcon to discover their link to free hosting goes to an error page, Checked out Brinkster and they only seem to have kilt their free service.

Google brings up a multitude of scams,non-eglish sites,dead-ends and general malarkey.

So, anyone know of some free web hosting,in english,That isn't designed to not let you have the promised service, with ftp access?

5mb will be plenty, and the odd banner or popup is acceptable, (as long as it isn't gain or other such nasties)

Thanks in advance.

http://free.hostdepartment.com/ - That one could possibly do, but are you looking for a subdomain?

I must say, the age of decent, honest, free web hosting is fading :(

How much traffic will there be, and what is the site for?

If there won't be very many big downloads, and less than 100mb or so traffic then I would host a *.jgi.co.nz or *.jgih.com for free.

I think the Orcon one went because of the big problems they were having. But not to worry. Just drop an e-mail to acboler [a]t orcon [do]t net [do]t nz, and he can set one up with no ads, subdomain, and ample space and bandwidth :)

This website should help you in your search:

Free hosting offers:

Just remember you often get what you pay for. :D

If said kid has an ISP account (or parents with one) they should have free hosting included with their dialup access.

It's hit and miss as to whether they have FTP or a Web interface, but it'd be a good start.

000k.com (http://www.000k.com/refer.php?id=mike000). Lots of space, databases, forums, photo albums, ftp, php, password protectable folders - almost anything you could want. NO ads, has been very reliable (I've only had downtime once, which they resolved and contacted their customers to explain why and to apologise etc. - even their non-paying customers like myself). You name it they've probably got it available in their standard free package.

Metla - can't understand what's with Orcon's free hosting, but I have a site on Portland (http://www.portland.co.uk/hosting.esp) - it's very good, 15MB, no ads, FTP access. Only restriction is low monthly bandwidth (100MB) but should be perfect for your requirements. Also supports proper domain names.

I asked them a couple of weeks ago what the story was and they said it was only temporary while they did some changes to their servers/system or whatever. They said their free hosting will be back but there was no indication of when.

In January 2005 I think they'll allow more free signups. The current free ones are working fine at the moment.

I would advise against cjb.net - The domain is often associated with adult/illegal sites and could be blocked by firewalls or the like.

Don't go to cjb.net.

I went there once and NAV alerted me that it was attempting to automcatically download a virus onto my PC, and some other nasty I can't remember.

They used to be good, but have turned dodgy.

Metla.... Did you resolve the Orcon website problem? Which website did you select. Did you build the site or the youngster? PJ

I'm afraid it all came to naught, I signed up for 000k and they sent an email stating my account had been activated, But didn't supply any details on how to access or upload to the space i was suposedly assigned...

So i then signed up with Portland ,and didnt so much as recieve the initial email they claimed to have sent me...

By this time the youngsters attenion had long since wandered into other areas.

If you are still looking, TJR Networks has a free hosting plan with 15MB space and 500MB b/w per month  Find out more here (http://www.tjrnetworks.com/hosting/free.php).

To apply please fill out the following form. We require that all applicants have an existing website which has at least 100 unique visitors per month.I imagine that will be a bit limiting for those who just wish to have a website to learn on/play with as they will not meet that criteria.

Sounds a bit scammy - I guess they'll expect a link from your existing site to theirs

I see you are giving Portland a go, if you can get it going they are the best free host I've used.

I still use them to host one site I started ages ago for Bougainville tourism (http://bougainville.port5.com/), and they give 15mb of space.

If it were, for example, something like http://metla.000k.com, then enter that with /cpanel at the end of it (so it'd be something like http://metla.000k.com/cpanel) - then you should be asked for a username and password, which will be something like metla000 and either a password they sent (?) or one that you specified (can't remember which one it was for me).

If you are still after a zero cost website 10 - 15 mb with 100mb of bandwidth I can do a full hosting (you provide the domain name).

no real catches (except nothing illegal - no pr0n). Of course I would prefer that you paid me for hosting, but I can provide the odd little one for playing around etc.

either PM me here or email me:

You used to be able to but there is no longer an option for creating website any more. Orcon said they would reinstate them "soon" but when is anybody's guess.

For all Orcon customers. Have you not been to their forums (http://forums.orcon.net.nz)? Questions have been asked and answers have been given there. To sign in you'll have to do so on the main page.
