Wigs, etc... indeed lovely.
Wigs on the green refers to a fight, brawl or fracas, or to a difference of opinion that could lead to fisticuffs. It often appears as “there’ll be wigs on the green”, as a warning (or a prediction) that an altercation is likely to occur. It’s originally Irish, dating from the eighteenth century, when men usually wore wigs. If a fight started, the first thing that happened was that the wigs of those involved would be knocked off and would roll incongruously about on the grass, to the amusement of bystanders and the embarrassment of participants.

Winston001, the only drop of Irish I have is rare poteen, but the mental picture conjured up by that phrase never fails to delight me.

Scouse, I believe it mostly referred to the gentry (with strong drink and umbrage taken) practising fisticuffs on (or near) each other, to the delight of the peasants. But, I may be wrong there, not unheard of. :@@:

Thanks for that, R2x1 and Scouse. I have not heard of that saying before but it is indeed lovely. :)

Furthermore, for your interest, my wife tells me the Nancy Mitford wrote a satirical novel called "Wigs On The Green" in 1934. Sheesh. I can never tell her anything! ( no wonder she was on University Challenge as a gal) :p

But you knew that Winston...?
