Hi people,
:)

i know some people have posted this in another post, but thought maybe some others would like it in their face!!!! to remind them.

http://farr.net.nz/chat/

now it is not full of dynamic PF1 people all the hours of a day, but do drop in from time to time and mostly at night you may catch somebody there, as we do have lives elsewhere......

be great to see some new faces there as well,

and of course all the regulars.

thanxs Liam, for a great site.

That looks like a very high fibre diet.

That would keep anyone regular, be it on ChatF1 or not?

Is it possible to login to ChatF1 via IRC or can you only use the webbased interface? I for one would use ChatF1 more often if i didnt have to use the website.

>I for one would use ChatF1 more often if i didnt have to use the website.

Not having much experience at the chatroom thing why do you say this?
What difference does it make?

Pete O\'Neil

I just dislike web based chatrooms, from my experience IRC clients are less resource hungry and offer more options. Web based chatrooms feel less responsive and often far more dependant on internet bandwidth.

Jester
09-11-2004, 11:25 AM
Yeah IRC would be nicer, however maybe less secure.

The Chat F1 is web based only, and doesn't seem to like Firefox in that it flickers during each refresh and the new chat is at the top of the page, rather than the bottom. Works ok in *cough* IE though.

There *is* an F1 IRC server you know... :)... FAQ 75 (or was it 65) can tell you all. AFAIK the security level should be the same - both transmit data in a non-encrypted fashion, but in both cases the data goes straight from client->server->client.

Cheers George

Does it now?

george12

That is, unless there's an evil hacker tapping the lines....

But what I was meaning is, neither one is more or less secure than the other (except for Chill's invisible encrypted secure IRC server of course).

I would debate that still.... Traffic usually goes through a good several hops before reaching said destination:

Regardless, that was a traceroute between myself and Google... That's where/who it goes through to get to Google.

Is your server Off-shore?

> Is your server Off-shore?

It's at my house. A traceroute to a friend of mine is 4 hops. Don't have the traceroute to paste in but:

1. My server
2. My router
3. Orcon server
4. His computer

On a different ISP it is 6 hops including my router.

But yes I agree that it passes through other machines - this is obvious. But I personally have no problem with trusting the machines at Global Gateway with the data - I'm sure they don't save/read it!

I hope that comes out okay... But yeah, from work its a good 9 hops. Now, theres the opportunity for logging at each of those, so you can see why I want SSL (Well, SSL sucks, but its all that IRC supports).

Isnt ignorance bliss :D
No offense intended....
But what would stop them? Surely if you worked at an ISP you'd be logging your customers transmissions?! What if the CIA came-a-knocking because one of your clients had tried to hack into the CIA online database?
Youd be in the poo if you couldnt produce results of who had what IP at said time right? So they're logging certain things regardless.... But with HDD space being cheap as chips, why wouldnt they do some heavy logging of the likes of emails, or certain ports?

Dont just "assume" because you've not been told they are - Instead, assume they are because theyve not told you ;-)

Ive got a bot on my server doing some basic things, but he's not too useful ATM - So I'm going to have a play with another tonight and I'll see how I get on with him.

Cheers

Yep all thoes URL's point to the same page on the same server, however I would like people to use Chatf1.co.nz or Chatf1.net.nz as the farr.net.nz URL will be phased out some time in the next few months.

And as for the cow/Mulder thing; that page needs a bit of an update :p
